Summary

Rom, 16. Jahrhundert. Michelangelo Buonarotti, der begnadetste Bildhauer seiner Zeit, soll im päpstlichen Auftrag die Decke der Sixtinischen Kapelle gestalten. Nur widerstrebend macht er sich ans Werk. Bald jedoch entflammt seine Leidenschaft und er möchte nicht weniger als das eindrucksvollste Fresko aller Zeiten erschaffen. Verzweifelt kämpft er an gegen abblätternde Farbschichten und die Bösartigkeiten seines Widersachers Bramante. Vor allem jedoch die Leidenschaft für seinen Schüler Aurelio droht ihn zu zerstören. Doch erst, als er die Kurtisane des Papstes in Marmor meißelt, scheint sein Tod besiegelt.
