Der Held dieses posthum veröffentlichten Romans ist der Büroangestellte Mersault, der durch einen Mord an so viel Geld kommt, dass er die Zeit nach seinen persönlichen Vorlieben gestalten und seinen nahenden Tod als einen glücklichen erwarten kann. Heiner Schmidt liest Albert Camus' Erstlingswerk atmosphärisch dicht.
