Summary
Als Sohn eines hohen und einflussreichen Staatsbeamten versagt Jakob, weich, träumerisch und nach innen gewandt, vor den Anforderungen der Wirklichkeit. Barbara ist von seiner Liebenswürdigkeit und seinem Charakter angezogen, verachtet ihn aber wegen seiner Lebensuntüchtigkeit. Als er sich nach dem Tod seines Vaters um seine Erbschaft betrügen lässt, heiratet Barbara einen Metzger aus der Nachbarschaft. Von nun an zieht der arme Spielmann geigend durch Wien.
