Diese Begegnung verändert sein Leben - und bringt ihm den Tod. Der Schriftsteller Gustav von Aschenbach reist zur Erholung nach Venedig und verfällt dort dem Knaben Tadzio. Trotz der Cholera, die in der Stadt grassiert, bleibt er in der Nähe des Angebeteten. Als Tadzio mit seiner Familie abreist, ist es für Gustav von Aschenbach bereits zu spät. Virtuos gelingt es Regisseur Ulrich Lampen die Sprache Thomas Manns in die Atmosphäre der sommerlich morbiden Lagunenstadt einzuweben. Ulrich Noethen als Erzähler und Rüdiger Vogler als Gustav von Aschenbach intensivieren die Stimmungsschwankungen des alternden Schriftstellers durch ihre gekonnt zurückgenommene Interpretation.
