 Frank Wedekind erscheint heute zu Recht als einer der bedeutendsten Dramatiker der Jahrhundertwende. Damals, ein Jahrzehnt vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg, war er im Widerstreit der Meinungen und unter den Attacken der Zensur das 'enfant terrible' der deutschen Bühnen. Die Groteske "Der Kammersänger" stammt aus dem Jahr 1897; Wedekind wollte sie weder als 'Hanswurstiade' noch als 'Konservationsstück', sondern als den 'Zusammenstoß zwischen einer brutalen Intelligenz und verschiedenen blinden Leidenschaften' verstanden wissen. Der Titelheld, seines Fachs ein berühmter Tenor, hat mit sich auszumachen solche Polaritäten wie privates oder öffentliches Interesse, Kunst oder Geschäft.
