Summary

The truth about demons is far stranger - and even more fascinating - than what's commonly believed.

Are demons real? Are they red creatures with goatees holding pitchforks and sitting on people's shoulders while whispering bad things? Did a third of the angels really rebel with Satan? Are demons and "principalities and powers" just terms for the same entities, or are they different members of the kingdom of darkness? Is the world a chaotic mess because of what happened in Eden, or is there more to the story of evil?

What people believed about evil spiritual forces in ancient biblical times is often very different than what people have been led to believe about them today. And this ancient worldview is missing from most attempts to treat the topic.

In Demons, Michael Heiser debunks popular presuppositions about the very real powers of darkness. Rather than traditions, stories, speculations, or myths, Demons is grounded in what ancient people of both the Old and New Testament eras believed about evil spiritual forces and in what the Bible actually says. You'll come away with a sound, biblical understanding of demons, supernatural rebellion, evil spirits, and spiritual warfare.

another stellar work from Heiser

I'll be rereading this one probably indefinitely, to attempt to upend my misconceptions about spiritual beings on both sides of the divide- I'm sure theres a reference pdf somewhere for this, though admittedly im still working through the references from unseen realm. id recommend this to anyone who has ever had questions about the devil or demons, but I think if you haven't got unseen realm or reversing hermon ( both are presented in a nutshell on YouTube for free) under your belt first the payoff of starting with demons would be considerably less than otherwise. I'd have given it 6 stars if I could

Don't let the title deceive you

The author is scriptually sound in the book. This is NOT the glorification of evil powers in the spiritual realm. It IS a clarification of the biblical text from source material. This is done by the analysis of thoughts, myths, texts, beliefs and information known to the biblical authors when the Bible was assembled as the inspired Word of the unique most high God, the Father of Jesus Christ. Which includes various Mesopotamian texts & apocryphal texts. The author soundly provides multiple proofs against antichrist thinkers, traditional beliefs & wrong theology.

Perfectly done

This book like all his others cleared up so many miss conceptions we believed to be true. Gordon's reading of it was wonderful. Going to start over again tomorrow. Have read Unseen realm 5 times and his others numerous times. It clarifies the bible so much and the war in heaven and earth. These books are must reads!!!! This war is unfolding around us!

Great treatment of historical life & truth.

Dr. Heiser has once more hit it out of the park. He breaks down the tall tales as he infuses Biblical facts to make this book the best on the subject I've ever experienced. If you were disappointed with its companion book "ANGELS" because it came across as too academic or not filling in all the gaps this time the author goes all the way ... and then some. I ordered it as soon Audible introduced it. Get this one & prepare to take on evil as Farher-God meant for His imagers to do just as His Blessed Son has done. I doubt if it will disappoint any one. I plan to give it a repeat listen very soon to pick up on those important points I may have glazed over too quickly. It will remain in my library for many years to come.

Valuable resource!

I love Michael Heiser's work and was hesitant to purchase an Audible version of this book, but time constraints left me little choice if I really wanted to tackle it. The narration, table presentations, and endnotes made it very worthwhile. I will probably go ahead and buy the paperback, but that's only because I need to highlight and dog ear some of the pages.

An Excellent Study

This is a much needed and excellent study of the powers of darkness which I heartily recommend! And its not just for those who have a morbid interest in such things. It brings much needed clarity to the total biblical worldview for believers and non-believers alike. Of course, and I'm sure the author would be amenable to this, you may find some points of disagreement. For a couple of examples, I disagreed with the author's attack on the Gap Theory of the creation of the world. I am in agreement with that view as presented in Jack W. Langford's book "The Gap is Not a Theory!" (2011). Also, the author takes the critic's view of the Long Ending of Mark (Mark 16:9-20). For myself, whether or not Mark himself wrote it, the holy Spirit certainly did. But these are topics found in the very end section of the book, and in no way nullify the great scholarship and helpful teaching found throughout. All in all, I recommend this book for everyone (although it is written on a moderately scholarly level). It is not just about demonology. Also, I thought the narrator did an excellent job, and was very easy to understand. So I give five stars to Overall, Performance, and Story!
