Summary

From award-winning comedian and writer Katy Wix comes Delicacy - a different kind of memoir from an astonishing new voice.

Twenty-one snapshots of a life - some staccato, raw and shocking, some expansive, meditative and profound, underpinned with moments of startling humour that shatter the darkness - all beginning with a single memory. A memory of cake.

The sickly royal icing marked the moment Katy found her voice. The madeira cake was the sun her group therapy sessions orbited. The 'missing cake' from a lost holiday has never let go. The Bara brith eaten in hospital after a life-altering car crash was as tough as the metal that hit her. The supermarket rock cake was where she 'practised wanting'.

Shocking, raw, darkly funny and deeply humane, Katy Wix's exploration of trauma, grief, addiction, love, loss, memory and hope is truly unforgettable.

I truly was not disappointed this is a really honest and heartfelt book I’m currently grieving someone that I personally feel like I have to grieve in secret. this book has really helped me it has however made go out today and buy loads of cake.

Absolutely beautiful

What a stunningly truthful & heartbreaking memoir about loss, grief and life. Katy Wix is an incredible performer and I love her comedy characters on TV, especially Carol in Stath Lets Flats, so I didn’t know what to expect of this book, but her writing is brilliant, funny and honest. I’d recommend anyone to listen, plus she narrates herself which is a much more intimate experience, taking you on a real journey. I was sorry when it ended. A real mix of the comedy we find in the darkest of places and the grief we have to carry when we lose someone close. Bravo Katy.x

Must read from an amazing lady

Lost a parent a decade ago and could have done with this book sooner. An honest look at the inner voices and experience. I think this lady is so talented and this just sets her apart for me.

Funny, sad, emotional

Absolutely beautiful book by the fantastic Katy Wix. This book covers adolescence, adulthood, love, puberty, death, grief in a funny yet respectful way. Absolutely loved it, even more so with Katy narrating and her funny voices for people.

Thanks Katy

A stunning read/listen
I’ve been waiting for this, since Katy said she’d finished writing it last year. A creative and at times funny way to tell a heartbreaking story of love, grief and mental health. Bryony Gordon has had 3 or 4 attempts at this, a perfect book by an amazing woman
Thanks Katy

Beautiful, funny and poignant

I’d never really considered how at every momentous occasion in our lives, cake is always there. Katy uses cake as a framing device to cover moments of loss and pain as well as celebration. Her openness is compelling and her turn of phrase is grab-you-by-the-guts beautiful. I would recommend this book in particular for anyone thinking about their relationship with food and eating, anyone who has lost someone close to them or is feeling a bit lost themselves.

Read this.

Got this as an audio book and stuck a chapter on to see what to expect, then ended up listening to it for the whole evening and then every minute I could sneak away from what I was supposed to be doing, until it, regrettably, ended. Review words like Brilliant and Excellent don't really cut it. Annoyed I've finished it to be honest. The author would probably hate this but it's one of the wisest things I've read. For anyone whose mental health makes them feel like an alien this will make you feel less like an alien and also make you laugh a lot. The section on personal trainers is a masterpiece. I think I love her. What the hell am I supposed to read now?
