 Plutarco, vissuto nel I secolo d.C., scrisse alcune brevi opere di estremo interesse e più che mai attuali, denominate "Moralia". Ne fa parte il "De esu carnium - Del mangiar carne", una sorta di "manifesto" contro l'usanza dell'epoca di mangiare carne. In questa breve opera, che ci è giunta incompiuta, l'autore dimostra il suo profondo amore per gli animali ed esprime con veemenza e con motivazioni del tutto logiche il suo disgusto e il suo disprezzo per gli uomini che si cibano di carne.

In questi due discorsi, Plutarco, che apparteneva alla corrente di pensiero platonica, non tralascia di citare l'antesignano ispiratore Pitagora. Questi era convinto dell'esistenza della reincarnazione e proibiva categoricamente ai suoi seguaci di cibarsi di carne. Inoltre Plutarco pone l'accento sul rispetto che l'uomo deve agli altri esseri viventi, che come lui sono fatti di sangue e carne e sono dotati di sentimenti.
