Story
Smart men never dabble with demons. I never claimed to be smart, but at least, I’m powerful enough to control them. When I bound Havoc to me nearly 300 years ago, I never realized how difficult he’d make my life, although “accidentally” lighting him on fire every now and then does bring a smile to my face. Havoc is handsome, mysterious, and somehow, my closest companion, even if we don’t always get along.

Story
Getting into the vampire-only detective unit was the easy part. What’s going to be more difficult is dealing with my new partner - an ancient vampire who keeps threatening to eat me. The unit has never had a human in it. Marcus - or, as I like to call him: Fangy McFangface - would really prefer to keep it that way. He’s grumpy, short-tempered, and broody, but I have a way with words, and I know he’s starting to like me, even if he swears he’s not.

Story
Being a hit man has its perks, but I never thought getting an accidental mooning by an attractive PI while he’s caught on a fence would be one of them. While it’s not exactly love at first sight, he’s captured my interest and won’t let go. Suddenly, I find myself caught in a game of cat and mouse, determined to attract the attention of Jackson, the PI who should be my enemy. He pretends like he’s not flattered by my flowers and the mentions of my totally-not-fictitious blow-up doll, Randy (or was it Dandy?), but I know better.

Two long years of insults, and having to redo the coffee pot four times in the mornings to meet his exacting standards. A psychic without an anchor. A student in trouble. A shooter on the loose. I’m Jonathan Bane, a licensed psychic who consults for the police. I routinely help the police put the bad guys away and, for that reason, the criminal world doesn’t like me much. My psychic ability prevents me from handling anything electronic - and I do mean anything, I fry it in seconds - so calling for help isn’t always a possibility. I need an anchor, a partner, but I’m resigned: It’s just wishful thinking. At least, I thought so until he walked through the door.

I’m rather used to the crazy cases, because let’s face it, most cops can handle the run-of-the-mill with their eyes closed. I’m only called in when the situation is weird or they need to solve the case fast. This case is a little of both. Someone’s attacking women as they get off of work, hitting them in the back of the head. What started as a case of battery has steadily built up to homicide. With three murders, six victims, and no leads, the Clarksville PD is desperate to catch the assailant. But there’s no real leads for us to follow, either....

I left my family and tiny Texas hometown 15 years ago to escape small-town gossips and to give my mom and sister the chance at a better life. But when a phone call from an attorney back home informs me that my sister passed away, leaving me custody of her newborn baby, I'm shocked out of the steady life I've built for myself running a tattoo shop in San Francisco. The thing is: I don't do babies. And I don't do small towns. Or commitment. And I especially don't do family.

Summary
Felix and Lane are struggling with just how boring a "normal" life is, so when they get a chance to jump into action, they do so without a second thought - especially since they're offered a lot of money. The request is simple: find a way to retrieve a watch from police custody.
But things are never as easy as they seem. Suddenly, they're caught in the middle of a family feud that could turn deadly. But no matter what, through kidnappings, car chases, and cooking mishaps, Felix knows that as long as Lane is by his side, they will find a way to set things right.

The further madcap adventures of Felix and Lane! Once again, Alice Winters knocks it out of the park with a fabulously complicated mystery full of sass, snark, and sexy times. the new characters are fantastic and three set up for the rest of the series is seriously exciting. Joel Leslie does a wonderful job as fiesty Felix and grumbly Lane. I love this series so much.

4.5 stars
I love this author and this series. This book seemed a little too meandering and running from one situation to the next at times so I nearly gave it 4 stars, but there was one section in the club where I was belly laughing because it was so funny (which is incredibly rare for me with a book), and the narration is fantastic (as always from Joel Leslie) so I gave it an extra half star.

SO GOOD!
If you have read the previous books, then you understand the delicate dance of mystery, romance, inner struggles and comic relief. Lane and Felix continue their adventures and become embroiled in a family feud over an inheritance. There are returning characters and a few new ones that I hope will be seen in coming stories. I especially felt for Cal and would love to read his story and hope he gets his HEA. Joel Leslie just gets better and better. I don't even bother with reading the ebook if I see that he's narrating. It is unbelievable that one person could voice so many distinct characters and convey the action and emotion so completely. He gives Felix the perfect "whine!" I totally recommend this audio book and wait desperately for the next installment.

love love LOVE & thirsting for more
The first two books were amazing, so I’ve had the third installment on preorder and shamelessly binge-listened in one day. Honestly? I don’t think I’ve ever laughed this much over an audiobook. Felix is hilarious with his antics and sticky fingers, and Lane is both indulgent and witty with his own comebacks and thirst for excitement. They have great chemistry, and together they’re either perfect for each other or terrible influences on each other. Actually. I’d say they’re both. And I’ve loved every minute of their love story. Without spoiling, I’ll just say that the plot is filled with so many interesting twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat wanting to know more. Not only is there humor and action, but some lovely tidbits of emotion to balance it out. New characters! Cal. I love him so much and I need to know more of his story. I hope we get to meet Grayson in the future as well, but for now, I’m so happy to know we will be at least seeing more of Cal. He is definitely my favorite addition. Antonio. He’s a great addition as well. I can see him being friends with Felix and Cal (with perhaps some reluctance on Antonio’s part). I hope we see more of him, too. Frank. Not much to say without spoiling anything, but I enjoyed the scenes with him. ... I plan to listen to more audiobooks from the author for sure. She’s brilliant. As for Joel Leslie. As always, he’s phenomenal at created different voices and capturing all the emotions and personalities of each character. So glad he narrated this series!

Laugh out loud fun
It’s all fun and games until someone steals a pig! This book literally had me laughing out loud. Though the story lost the rip roaring pace towards the middle, the action, mystery, and hilarious mayhem picked up speed again as the story built with intensity and ended up being one of my favorites. It is an intricate story with quite a few plot twists and surprises along the way. As always, Lane and Felix have this bizarrely strange and totally loving relationship, which is just the right blend of sappy and ridiculous. Joel Leslie does a fantastic job as always ‘becoming’ the characters. His nuanced reading especially bring Felix’s absurdity to life.

Another great entry in this snark & cuddle mystery
Audiobook Review September 2020: There just has to be more Felix and Lane to come but until then, I am going to love rereading/relistening to this amazing series. Just something about the pair that can warm your heart and infuriate you all at the same time. Truly makes this series great and it's fun to read something a little different. Joel Leslie does the best narration, he really brings these guys to life. Original Review February 2020: I probably should have just written an overall series review because though I read book 1 back in November for my Caregiver Month 2019 post, I read books 2, 3, & 3.5 back-to-back-to-back now. However, I wrote them up individually so don't be surprised if some of what I've said previously shows up again. On to Deception in Darkness. Felix and Lane are brilliantly snarky and cuddly as always. They are perfect together and by "perfect" I mean completely imperfect with brutal honesty, zinger and one-liner filled banter that to the outsider may seem mean and spiteful but to those of us who get Felix and Lane we know it's all done from a place of compassion, friendship, and respect fueled 150% by love. I understand how that kind of relationship isn't for everyone and why some might see it as mean and spiteful but as I said previously my parents have a similar zinger-filled banter relationship(on a smaller scale without the danger addiction😉😉) and they'll be celebrating their 50th in October so when I see that kind of relationship in books I get it and find it completely heartwarming to know that others out there have experienced it too. As for the danger I mentioned above, well I don't know who is more heavily addicted: Felix or Lane? They both have a penchant for trouble, Felix is probably more of a magnet for it, Lane may not go looking for it but he certainly doesn't shy away from it when it presents itself. Just one of the many reasons why they are perfectly matched. I'm not going to say any more specifics to Deception's plot or the situations the guys find themselves in but I will add that not a single character is extra, page-filler, or unnecessary because each and everyone plays a part. New and old, each makes their mark and earns their spot in the In Darkness series. Whether there is more to come in Felix and Lane's journey I don't know but I will definitely welcome any of their adventures for years to come. More or not, this will definitely be going on my re-read/listen list. The blending of humor, romance, heat, danger, and adventure makes this one I'll never tire of visiting.
