About this listen

I own you. I have the piece of paper to prove it. It's undeniable and unbreakable. You belong to me until you've paid off your debts.

Nila Weaver's family is indebted. Being the first born daughter, her life is forfeit to the first born son of the Hawks to pay for sins of ancestors' past. The dark ages might have come and gone, but debts never leave. She has no choice in the matter.

She is no longer free.

Jethro Hawk receives Nila as an inheritance present on his 29th birthday. Her life is his until she's paid off a debt that's centuries old. He can do what he likes with her - nothing is out of bounds - she has to obey.

There are no rules. Only payments.

Jethro isn't a nice man. Nyla hates him, but she hates the way her body reacts to him more.
I didn't warm to Jethro at all in this first book in The Indebted series but look forward to listening to book 2 and hopefully changing my mind about him.

An exciting, dark read!

I've read a lot of mixed reviews about this series, and after devouring Monsters in the Dark, I wanted to get lost in more of Pepper's addictive writing.

Jethro is a complicated character... and I'll admit, he's a character I've struggled to like in this book. I've also struggled a little with the basis of the story - I've questioned a lot of things while reading this book and have been left sometimes feeling like maybe... it's going too far. At these times I remind myself - it's fiction. It wouldn't actually happen, but it makes for an interesting storyline, and let's be honest, there are stories out there that are more unbelievable.

I read one review that hated the ending... personally, I loved it, and it was partly the reason I downloaded the rest when I finished this.

This series won't be to everyone's taste, and if you've read Pepper before, you'll already know she loves to write taboo.

Will does an amazing job at portraying Jethro, I could listen to him all day long. He just has a way of making you completely believe the story.

Go in with an open mind, remember it's fiction, and you'll enjoy it.

A slow starter, but well worth continuing

For the longest time, I wanted to know what the buzz was about this series, and now I know! Pepper Winters has mesmerized us with a story that is not only dark and delicious, but horrific! I had no idea what it was about, but I know I love dark. Starting this story as Nila is given to Jethro as a family debt. How can that be? Why her? What is the debt? Winters takes us back to a time, where debts pass from generation to generation. But this payment is just not viable or legal. Or is it? There are parts of this book that I want to say I love Jethro, then I don't. I feel for Nila, and find her strength incredible, but I am really unsure of the outcome. We are left on a cliffhanger that only leaves you wanting more, and has so many unanswered questions that the only thing to do is download book 2!!! And of course, I am. If you love dark tales, this is for you. I can't wait to see where Ms. Winters is going to take me.

This narration is impeccable. A better Jethro could not have been picked. Will Watt has a voice that can be sexy and seductive, then turn and be commanding and dangerous. His voice acting is one of the best and I am loving his interpretation of Jethro. Kyle Stewart has found the essence of Nila. This is a tough character, young, fairly innocent and in a predicament that she knows what she has to do to survive. Stewart delves in and finds each emotion, leaving us in the dark just as Nila is! A perfect pair for this book.

Hooked!

Nila Weaver is indebted to the Hawks, in particular Jethrow Hawk due to some 600 year old agreement that both families still honour for some strange reason. Nila's character hasn't drawn me in as yet. She's creative, smart, inexperienced, at times coy and shy, whilst other times confident and outspoken. Jethrow on the other hand is your ultimate bad guy, the things he puts her through shows he cages a beast within (he's no Q, but twisted all the same). He's the master of his emotions.. that is until Nila.

I liked it but I didn't love it. I'll definitely read the next instalment as the ratings seem to improve.

It's ok, hope the series improves
