About this listen

John Porter, hero of the original Strikeback novel and TV series returns in an exciting adventure, when old enemies attack the SAS.

1999. A bitterly cold morning in the Brecon Beacons and the soldiers trying out for SAS Selection are preparing to face their toughest test yet. Overseeing the soldiers is John Porter: once a promising young Blade, now a broken man and a drunk, seeing out his days in the Regiment Training Wing.

But before the Fan Dance can begin, six masked gunmen carry out a devastating attack. Dozens of soldiers are killed. In the aftermath of the massacre and with a government desperate for action, Porter and another surviving operator John Bald, are taken to a secretive briefing in London. Their orders - to hunt down and kill those responsible for the attack.

What follows is a deadly game of kill or be killed as Bald and Porter lead a Strike Team across Europe on a blood-soaked mission of revenge. But as they draw closer to their ultimate target, the men discover that there is a greater threat - much closer to home.

I decided to start listening to the strike back series after completing all of the Reacher, Rapp, Orphan X and James Reece books. It took me a few chapters to get into it. I weren’t sure of both the narrator’s or the characters voices, I think I am that used to the American twang that hearing English and Scottish accents threw me!?! I thought the storyline and plot was interesting, a good mixture of revengeful violence and creativity in the killings. The technical content appears descriptive and accurate. I think the way the two main characters backgrounds are set put me off a little as I like to think of the assassinating characters as superhero baddy killers and not some spent reject or drunkard thrown into a mission! Anyway, I did find it quite enjoyable in the end and I think I will listen to the next one in the series to fully make my mind up as to whether I listen to the full series.

Very gory, but a great listen. Really enjoyed the twists towards the end.

A bit over descriptive with the weapons and ammo though.

Awful story, terribly written and with a painfully limited narrator.
Don't waste your time or money on this book!

terrible

Story is great. Grotesque violence is a little extreme... However don't bother with the booktrack thing. Nothing more than really rubbish background music and occasional, extremely simplistic sound effects like a car door closing.

Booktrack edition is not recommended
