Summary

DOA becomes BRB when this client goes MIA....

When I agreed to accompany my selkie boyfriend on a private boat trip, I didn’t realize the invitation included a swim. In the Pacific. In November. Naked. And I certainly didn’t expect to have our swim derailed the instant I got in the water—holy crap, that’s c-c-cold—by a literal boatload of selkie clan leaders.

Climbing out of the water in front of them—did I mention naked? Yeah, way to make a brilliant first impression. Then things get worse: I get served. Not in the metaphorical sense, either. Nope, I’m being sued.

By Death.

Well, not Death precisely, but an Ankou—a Celtic psychopomp who escorts the departed to their final destinations. This guy is miffed that his workload has increased exponentially, which he blames on my actions in Sheol on an earlier case. I’m not about to take the heat when eons of shady demon shenanigans finally come home to roost, but here at Quest Investigations, we aid any and all supernatural folk in need—especially if they’ll drop their specious lawsuits against the agency’s lone human.

When the Ankou skips out on us, though, all hell breaks loose. Because without anyone to lead them on, the dearly departed become nearly departed and stick around to party hearty. Now it’s not just the selkie leaders complicating my love life—it’s the ex-living as well.

And when one of the ex-living decides not to remain ex? Things get really complicated, not to mention deadly.

Dammit.

Death on Denial is the fourth in the Quest Investigations M/M mystery series, a spinoff of E.J. Russell’s Mythmatched paranormal rom-com story world. It contains no explicit sex or violence, and although there is a romantic subplot, it is not a romance. The series is best listened to in order.

Fantastic addition

A fantastic addition to the series by EJ Russell. Great to catch up with the guys and to join them on the next adventure. Greg Boudreaux was a superstar with the narration.

So good!

This book is my favorite in the series so far! I enjoyed so much how so many situations were happening at the same time in such intensity and chaos that the captivating plot caught me from the beginning until the very last page. I love so much this world Ms. Russell created and how all the amazing characters get involved in the adventures and misadventures of Matthew (Hugh) and his disastrous love life. Mr. Boudreaux captures beautifully all the intensity, all the emotions and of course all the hilarity of the situations and misunderstandings Matthew suffered throughout the book. Great story and a wonderful performance! Loved it!

Funny and Exciting

Death on Denial is the fourth book in the Quest Investigations series, a series which is part of the Mythmatched world that E.J. Russell has created. I adore this universe and all the books in it, and highly suggest reading the multiple series – they all build on each other which makes it fun to explore this universe. However, the Quest Investigation series can be read as a standalone series, but I do suggest reading all the Quest books in order.

Matt and Lachlan are once again on the case…or at least Matt is and Lachlan is off doing selkie things. The relationship between the two men are heating up and moving fast – maybe a little too fast – but things are turning weird in the Supe (supernatural) world. I adore a good mystery, and this book delivers it – along with it’s signature humor and zany shenanigans. Once I started this book I could hardly put it down. I found myself sneaking it during work just because I needed to hear what happened next.

The audiobook was narrated by Greg Boudreaux who does a fantastic job as usual. Greg voices all the characters perfectly and this makes the audiobook such a wonderful experience. I was completely captivated by the performance and binged this audiobook in a day.

Matt finally gets his Selkie

Great narration of a great book.
I read this story when it was released and loved it then. I loved reading and then listening to Matthew and Lachlan's romance coming to fruition and the end of Matthew's celibacy/waiting.
Misunderstandings and missed opportunities abound and then more stuff to investigate pops up, selkies ghosts and more.
Really enjoyed this story, poor Lachlan, if he'd only explained - it wouldn't have taken so long, but then of course there were all these distractions and things Matthew needed to fix.
Love EJ's stories, they are always entertaining - full of humour, magic and unusual characters.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

We're getting somewhere!

I am always happy to find a new book by E.J. Russell, and this one did not disappoint. Friendship, snark, magic and excitement galore! Also, the magic of love, be it platonic, brotherly or romantic.

I have only one complaint, and that is Mathew's obliviousness to the importance of The Swim. Interest in all things magic is a central part of his character, so ignoring that many Hints from his boyfriend should not be possible. But that incongruous detail did not stop me from having a great time!

One of the best series on audio

One of the best series on Audio

The world-building is beyond good, and the character development is so detailed. Each book is unique, and the stories keep you tuned in from start to finish, although you need to read/listen to them in order as they aren't really stand-alone books.

This book doesn't have a HEA, but it is a rom-com. However, it's funny, heartfelt, slightly odd and has a lot of magical mischief and death. So we get a bit of everything, and it's addictive. You need every book ASAP.

Well worth the read/listen. It's the type of series you can go back to many times, as I'm sure you miss bits as it's so full.

Greg Boudreaux does a fantastic job narrating, as usual. However, like I usually do, I sped up to 1.15 in audible.

Hu(gh) gets his man (human, get it?)

This was the perfect ending (if it is the end) for Hugh/Matt and Lachlan's love arc. I enjoyed the story, especially the nickname "Slacker Death" and all the twists and turns that led to the stunning and (for me) surprising conclusion. I didn't see THAT villain coming. I do have to warn, for those who have enjoyed the (sometimes slapstick) humor of this series, that this one wasn't as funny to me. It seemed a lot more serious, dramatic, and tragic (comparatively speaking.) I enjoyed it, but I didn't really laugh that much. Also, you definitely need to read (or listen to) the rest of the series first, because of lot of characters from prior books show up for the finale in this one, and you might not know who they are otherwise.

The narration was spectacular, full of feeling and emotion, and the character voices were easy to separate and distinguish.

I received a free copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

So much fun!

Love the team at Quest! I really hope Lachlan & Matt can get it together soon. This is a fun continuation of a unique series/spin-off, overlapping characters, and misadventures. A very entertaining read, though I'm not gonna lie, I'd llike a little more steam.
Greg Boudreaux does a phenomenal performance. Always appreciate narrators being so consistent with character voices & bringing such emotion (and varying accents) to life for eager listeners. Gerat job!

Absolutely perfect!!

This audiobook was one of my most anticipated of the year and it was just perfect! I loved every single word and I pretty much listened to it without stopping. So many things happened in the book, amazing things. The suspense storyline was as always very interesting. I didn't guess who the bad guy was but I liked how the author handled their character and their story, very satisfying ending. There were some really funny moments in the book that made me laugh and some really intense that made me tear up. I loved meeting Jordan's little brother. And of course Matt finally got his very much deserved happily ever after and it was beautiful and heartwarming. I'm in love with this magical world, I can't get enough and I just love all the characters. The narrator was always absolutely amazing and brought this fantastic book to life brilliantly! I'll definitely listen the entire series again and again.
