An enjoyable urban fantasy...
Laz is a necromancer. By day he runs a shop - trying to make ends meet. He's also been known to do the occasional seance, but his real abilities are much more powerful.
As Laz locks up shop one afternoon, he's approached by a young woman who wants his help. She says her life is in danger, and the source of the danger isn't of this world. On this occasion, however, Laz is about to go on a hot date....
Unfortunately, the next morning, the woman is found dead outside his shop, and its looking like Laz is the number one suspect. Laz needs to keep the police off his back, whilst he tries to figure out what happened, and just who has left this rather gruesome message on his doorstep...
A fun, supernatural tale - well told by Travis Baldree...

Thoroughly enjoyable opening for a new UF magical venture.
I was uncertain about this novel, tbh, as there are a number of magical UF series out there, at the moment, with wizards, gods, Fae and deathly creatures. But there is more than enough room for one more, as it turns out.
The characterisation began quite predictably, but then there was enough of a distinction from the usual tropes, and the performance of the narrator only helped with this, so that the book took on it’s own identity, in very short order.
There is a rich vein of magical lore that can be mined, in such a venture. We shall soon find out what the author settles upon for the next books (I hope!).
The story isn’t overly complex, but then again, it’s an introduction to a series, and it does so *very* well, whetting my appetite for more, by the end, so that I wanted to hear more, straightaway.
For me, that’s the job done - by writer and narrator, both. I will most certainly be following the magical adventures of Laz, Fourth Horseman, Pale Rider and hapless, hopeless wizard-cum-good-guy, who is not so powerful that he can’t get his ass handed to him, every so often.
A great opening to a series that holds a lot of promise. A solid four stars for me, edging upward.
Hear you soon, Laz! :)

Great Urban Fantasy
Ok, so I was still a little on the fence after listening to the sample, but thought I’d give it a go... and wow, am I glad I did.
Hooked from the first 5 minutes and kept up the intense pace throughout. What a great story and very well written.
Travis does an excellent job with all the characters and his voice fits perfectly with the setting; he sets the mood so well too, really pulling off the intensity of fight scenes etc.
Really hope there’s more to come from this pairing; loved it!!

Meet Lazarus Kerrigan, the new kid!
Move over Dresden and Vesik. There's a new kid in town... Meet Lazarus Kerrigan (Laz for short). A wizard, necromancer, an all around nice guy, and the proprietor of a magic shop in New Orleans, who's just trying to get by, offering up seances that are more showmanship than the real thing, because people really can't handle reality, no matter how much they beg to see their dead mother one final time...
Laz' life is about to get really complicated when the police discover a body on the doorstop of his shop!
Travis Baldree did what Travis Baldree does best, giving us a damn fine narration performance!
Ya' gotta grab this wonderful Urban Fantasy, and stalk the backstreets and graveyards of New Orleans with Laz, as he searches for answers to what's happening!

*** SPOILER ALERT ***
Man, what a great way to complete the first half of a 13-hour drive! This was a story that I would not have heard of were it not for a social media group I am a member of (Thanks for the Booky McBookface recommendation, Team TW).
I am growing to be a greater fan of urban fantasy and I feel this is a great representation of that genre. I loved how the story rapidly launched you into the main plot point with Brandy.
As a D&D fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the necromancy narrative and the explanations behind several of the powers/capabilities that Laz displayed throughout. The powers introduced by the Baron were also a great twist and a storyline I can’t wait to see explored more in the sequels. The shifting relationship between Laz, Emma, and Moses was an immediate draw-in-and-keep-you-hooked aspect of the story for me.
The methods Laz used to work with and control the dead, in a manner far different than that of a medium from a traditional story, was fun. I really enjoyed the portrayal of impact the use of the powers Laz possessed had on him, for example the kiss of life. Likewise, watching a skeptic get thrown face first into this world shift their mindset became another great hook for the story.
Oh, and for those that decide to read/listen to the story, wait until you meet Jolene. The Baron was also a fantastic character that actually reminded me of the voodoo character from the latest season of American Horror Story.
This is the third story I have listened to that was narrated by Travis Baldree. He did a fantastic job as usual and really helped bring the story to life.
I can’t wait for the next entry in this series and will be lined up to purchase it once the Audible release is announced. This book definitely helped solidify my interest in Urban Fantasy. I can now firmly say that, as with Starship Troopers, yes, “I would like to know more”.

It's like a high school edge lord tried to rip off the Dresden Files. The narrator doesn't really help matters either. The female voices are all bad. There are a few interesting ideas here but the execution is so awkward and unrefined it's almost cringeworthy.

Fun Start to a Promising Series
I listened to a few of The Dresden Files and this definitely has a similar vibe. I would say it reminded me a bit more of the TV show than the books. I liked how this story as a whole seemed more playful than The Dresden Files and I preferred Lazarus’s wit a bit more. I wouldn’t say that this story adds anything unique to the genre, but it is a fun listen and worthwhile for anyone into sarcastic wizards battling evil on the city streets.
The characters are where this story really shines. Lazarus’s flaws as a professional necromancer coupled with his smart-aleck comments makes for a fun main character. The skeptic cop with her itchy-trigger-finger partner, the dead lady on the doorstep, and the missing girlfriend round out a solid cast. The characters are quite well developed and each one brings a different energy to the story. Much like a sitcom I think this story works as they play off each other and it is the group that makes it what it is more so than one individual.
The fantastic characters more than makes up for the lack of plot development. For the first book in what I assume is going to be a series you don’t get a lot of information about the world and the story seems more like it was told further into the series and not as the introduction to Lazarus and his world. I hope that this is a series and that we get more of the same team with a more defined setting.
Travis Baldree is an excellent character narrator. He brings the books he reads to a whole different level with his voice. You can hear the enjoyment he has doing the different voices and it just makes every book he reads so entertaining. If you haven’t had a chance to watch him sample some books you really should check it out.
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Okay, I really liked the book. My problem is that it follows so many other stories with the same story line. Female cop, male with magic. Gods and the 4 horsemen. Been there done that. A twist in a different direction might be good.

Derivative and disappointing
If you want a better book in every way, go read the Harry Dresden series. After all, the Dresden Files was clearly the source material for this watered down knock off. The sheer amount of blatant "borrowing" just blew my mind. Even with all that great material in hand, this book still sucks. The narrator did not help. Dude- you can breath between words, its not a contest to see how fast you can get through it, its not Gilmore Girls. Skip this one

Wow!!!!!! This was a fantastic book. It has so much action and some humor. I just love Laz. This was one of those books you just can't put down. The character great and the book is well written. The narrator, Travis Baldree does a fantastic job. And with audio books the narrator has to be good to bring out each character he does. Travis does it. I look forward to more in this series, The author has created a fantastic world. I was gifted this book at my request in exchange for an honest review,

Highly Recommended start to a new series!
This was a great listen! The story carries itself, and the narrator enhances the story and characters with great voices and narration.
Lazarus is a necromancer. A woman stops him on his way home and tells him someone is trying to kill her. He blow her off only to find her dead on his doorstep the next morning and he is the prime suspect. A female cop, to her chagrin, winds up helping him investigate to find the real murderer, but she is very skeptical throughout and still thinks Laz had something to do with it.
New Orleans is the setting, so there is magic and voodoo, along with Death and Baron Samedi, and they may be trying to take Laz with them for good.
Fun start to a new series that I will be looking for more of.
