Summary

Ali Wong's heartfelt and hilarious letters to her daughters cover everything they need to know in life, like the unpleasant details of dating, how to be a working mum in a male-dominated profession and how she trapped their dad.

In her hit Netflix comedy special Baby Cobra, Wong told the world her remarkably unfiltered thoughts on marriage, sex, Asian culture, working women and why you never see new mum comics onstage but you sure see plenty of new dads.

The sharp insights and humour are even more personal in this completely original collection. She shares the wisdom she's learned from a life in comedy and reveals stories from her life offstage, including the brutal single life in New York (i.e., the inevitable confrontation with erectile dysfunction), reconnecting with her roots (and drinking snake blood) in Vietnam, tales of being a wild child growing up in San Francisco and parenting war stories. Ali Wong's letters are absurdly funny, surprisingly moving and enlightening (and gross) for all.

So enjoyable and touching

Wisdom, humour, funny stories. Great listen. Alu Wong’s story of hard work to make it in comedy and create a happy, fulfilling life for herself is impressive and entertaining.

loved it

Burned through this in one weekend. It's funny, uplifting and interesting, and I loved that it wasn't just an autobiography in chronological order. You won't regret it.

What a very funny and honest person.

Initially I wasn’t that interested in this , In fact I was surprised I’d bought it.

I don’t even know why I pressed play I was that disinterested.

But I did and that’s one of the better decisions I’ve made this year.

The audible version is read by the author and you can’t help falling for her humour, , honesty and her love.

What an amazingly grounded and lovely person.

I’m off to binge all her comedy specials now.

What a great, interesting listen

Beautiful, empowering, eye opening and hilarious

Ali Wong was at her brash, bawdy, and unapologetic finest in this book. I love her comedy and was excited to learn more about the woman off the stage - I was not disappointed! I loved the openness she offered about her experiences, the hilarity of her anecdotes and just the all around honesty.

I'm not big into memoirs and the like, but this one was excellent.

One last thing, I've read a few reviews that didn't like the final chapter where her husband Justin offers his perspective, but I found it refreshing and interesting to see the story from the other side. To me it was less of a justification as to why he chose to support her career over his own, and more about trying to address the stigma that exists around men supporting powerful women... and that is something that definitely needs addressing more.

Mixed feelings about this

The book felt a bit all over the place, I didn't understand the logic behind the order of the chapters.
I liked how brutally honest she was about being a woman though - periods, miscarriage, childbirth and long recovery, sex life and relationships. Also being ”different” but ”the same” (in the context of ethnicity and gender).
Overall I had a feeling that I witnessed something personal that I wasn't supposed to see, especially when I got to her husband's chapter.

Funny, dirty and moving

Great book that basically encapsulates all the amazing things about Ali Wong and shines a light on just why she is the way she is. Moving epilogue by her husband with his own letter to his daughters.

Excellent but Mr Wong's part doubles that

Really enjoyed the intimate and carefully paced comedy, very close to Baby Cobra's comedy. It's also a good prelude to seeing the movie "always be my maybe," which had lol moments that repeated it related to jokes and stories here.

But the most inedible thing is Husband Justin's contribution at the end, which is erudite and a masterclass in Fatherhood in itself. It also helps to answer much of the tension I feel when she jokes about him during her comedy, so it's doubly important in that way.

Have come back to this book a number of times.
