Summary

Deadly Harm is an electrifying psychological thriller. It will appeal to fans of authors like Mark Edwards, Gillian Flynn and Ann Cleeves.

It’s been five years since Mackenzie Darroch was held captive in a derelict house. She thought she'd found her way out of the darkness. She was wrong.

When she witnesses a car crash and saves the driver’s life, it sets a chain of events that will alter their futures. Gina Calvi is convinced Mackenzie is not what she appears and is prepared to do anything to prove it.

Meanwhile, across the city, Kirsty McBride, a young single mother, is persuaded to leave a violent relationship. Her partner Malkie Boyle, a Glasgow hardman, is due to be released from prison. Bent on revenge, Boyle is determined to find the people responsible for stealing his family from him.

Can Mackenzie save them, or will Boyle get his revenge?

Gripping to the end

After listening to the first in this series, I was keen to hear more and wasn’t disappointed. So many twists and turns there were no prior clues as to what the end would be. I haven’t looked to see if there is a sequel but if there is I’ll definitely put it on my list

Tense thriller

Excellent pace and plot. Believable characters. Loved this book up to the last. I liked the way we saw into the motivation of each character.

great

I really love these Scottish detective stories. Full of action from start to finish. Owen Mullen writes a great story with some interesting characters.

Bleak tale re domestic abuse leading to murders!

This is my second book by author Owen Mullen, and he seems to have a theme, the calling out men's abuse, control of women. Out of the Silence was set in Pakistan, this time he brings the issue home to the UK, Glasgow.
Mackenzie Darroch, once a victim of abduction [her story apparently told in an earlier book, In Harms Way] has set up a women's refuge to offer sanctuary & help to those fleeing domestic abuse. When she blames herself for the death of a young mother at the hands of another brutal man, she vows never again, and extreme action follows.
There's no excuse for domestic abuse, nothing warrants it, is forgivable about it, so the topic is bound to make for a somber novel but Deadly Harm is unrelentingly bleak. Although compelling, there's no let up, no brief respite, no glimmer of dark humour, making for a dour listen. The final fatal scene is dramatic.

Masterful storytelling

Loved everything about the book, from the narrator, to the storyline and suspense. I will definitely read all the other books by this author

Great story

It’s not often you can listen to a plot and be kept wondering what will happen next. A great story with an unusual subject matter and well narrated.

Great characters

Interesting characters on all sides, made for a gripping story and I became very invested in how the story would end. The narrative is also very good with good voice changes for each character. I will listen to this again.

Bleak

I thought the previous book was very good and gave a high rating - but this is unrelentingly bleak. No respite. No humour or wit which we do get from the other Scottish crime writers. All characters are stereotypical. Only positive is it was a free read.
