For Alex Lowry, life is for the living. Even if that comes with a lot of risk.

And where some men his age might just buy a sports car, he's become a full-blown adrenaline junkie. Whether it's lawnmower racing, rock climbing, or medieval combat, he'll give it a go - whatever makes him happy!

His daughter Hannah thinks he might have lost the plot. Chances are, she's absolutely right.

So when Alex's risk taking goes too far, and painful revelations from the past come to the surface, she has to intervene, before it's too late...

Dead Happy is a darkly funny, deeply moving story about family, guilt, and finding the courage to face your demons.

I’ve read and listened to a lot of Nick Spalding’s work over the years, and I’ve always associated him with sharp humour, warmth, and that wonderfully chaotic, feel‑good energy. Dead Happy is a very different book. It’s darker, sadder, and far more emotionally heavy than anything I’ve read from him before.

Audible’s description frames it as “darkly funny” and “deeply moving,” which is true — but it doesn’t fully prepare you for the depth of the themes involved. The story centres on Alex Lowry, an adrenaline‑chasing dad whose increasingly risky behaviour masks unresolved trauma and guilt. His daughter Hannah’s attempts to pull him back from the brink are heartfelt and relatable, and the family dynamics are well written.

But this book goes to some very painful places. It deals directly with suicidal ideation, self‑destructive behaviour, and the emotional fallout of long‑buried grief. These elements aren’t lightly touched on; they’re central to the story. As someone who expected Spalding’s usual comedic tone, I found myself blindsided by how heavy it became.

It is a good book — thoughtful, honest, and at times beautifully written — but it’s not the kind of humorous escapism many readers will be expecting from this author. Because of that, I genuinely believe it should come with a clear content warning about suicide and self‑harm themes. Not everyone wants or is able to engage with those topics without preparation.

I’m giving it 3 stars: not because it’s poorly written, but because the emotional tone is so different from Spalding’s usual style, and the lack of a warning meant I went in unprepared for how sad and intense it would be.

If you’re in the right headspace for a darker, more introspective story about guilt, family, and facing your demons, this may resonate deeply. If you’re expecting a typical Nick Spalding comedy, please be aware that this one is much heavier.

Darker than audible description

I adore this series. This is brilliant and very true to life. Funny. Sad. Unpredictable. Please do a follow up!!!! Or start a new series!

Narration was very realistic

If you’re expecting a usual laugh out loud situational comedy with a great moral, then this book definitely isn’t that. However it is a great book; well written with great narrators. It’s dark and harrowing in places, prompting a few tears here and there

Not Nick’s usual style, but still great

A lot of ups and mostly downs and although the story was about loss it was a bit meh, and not as good as the other titles from Nick. But you can’t win em all I guess

Short story not as good as his other titles

I’ve read every book he’s written and some will never match up to Fat Chance but I think on the whole this one does. I enjoyed the storyline and characters the positivity it shows even in the darkest times. Well done Nick.

Another Great Spalding
