Summary

You might as well know this going in: Lawrence Block's new novel is not for everyone. It's recounted in journal form by its protagonist, and begins when he walks into a roadhouse outside of Bakersfield, California, and walks out with a woman. And rapes and murders her. But, um, not in that order.

Right. But it's what he does with the rest of his life that's really interesting....

Dark and Gritty

Loved this. Very different from Lawrence Block books previously read yet just as compelling thou darker. Peter Berkrot's narration seals this crowning achievement.

Really Creepy

This is a brave book. It's starts with an utterly vile crime committed for no obvious reason and then goes on to examine the killer's internal and external responses to 'a moment of madness'. Whether a self - described sociopath can live a 'normal' life while waiting for the inevitable knock on the door makes for compelling listening and the tone is more Keller the hit man than Scudder the PI. The reflections on guilt reminded me of Dostoyevsky's 'Crime and Punishment' and I was also put in mind of Jim Thompson's classic 'The Killer Inside Me'. This book won't be to everyone's taste but I enjoyed it a lot and totally respect Lawrence Block for charting new territory and not resting on his laurels.
