About this listen

Isaac, a young Australian photographer, is travelling through Europe. His whole life he has longed for the sophistication and wealth of the Europe of his father’s stories, the Europe at the centre of civilisation and culture.

But behind the facade of a unified and globalised contemporary society, he finds a history blasted wasteland, a place forever condemned by the ghosts of its unspeakable past.

Dead Europe is an unsettling ghost story about blood lust, blood libel, and blood revenge.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Absolutely worth the ~13 hours. The characters elicit strong reactions and the story itself takes you down dark, unpleasant paths that you might not want to traverse.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Well written but hardly a big surprise if you were following the story and took time to think about where things were going.

Any additional comments?

This may apply to Dead Europe but is meant more as a general observation: I never understood why people supposed to be speaking in their own languages always have funny English accents. It's their mother tongue for crying out loud! There should be a distinction between having an accent when speaking in English and speaking a foreign language.

Weird and interesting, challenging and disturbing

I really enjoyed the content of this book, both storyline and the raw way of writing and would definitely recommend reading the book.
However, the narration was a major letdown. The characters are all of Greek origin and the book is full of Greek words and names. Despite that the narrator mispronounces almost everything and makes some of the characters sound like they are acting in My big fat Greek wedding. It is just lazy and embarrassing.
In short, buy the book not the audiobook.

Great storyline, bad narration

I found this book interesting... I thought it was a little too focused on the gay aspect and this took away from the story line a little for me. But I was entertained the whole way through. Except at the end ... It could have ended differently for me.

Interesting
