Sebastián Barry at his best - an interesting story filled with the most vivid descriptions bringing the scenes to life, well read and the story is a mixture of harsh realities of war and the love between the main characters.
I really enjoyed this book and could listen to it again.

Riveting book. Deservedly won Costa prize and sensitively read by Irish reader. Will be made into film assuredly. Can't recommend highly enough!

Brilliant story

This book really impressed me - the writing was superb and painted such a clear picture of the intensely difficult life of a poor, gay, Sligo man and the love of his life the 'handsome John Cole'. I particularly loved the landscape descriptions and was horrified by the blood and guts of the fighting scenes and the injustices towards the indigenous Indians of America. It was narrated in beautiful, lyrical Irish tones which helped during the more bloodthirsty descriptions of army life. I think it would make a great movie - though the language of the landscape would get lost. Loved it!

I have read this book and it immediately became one of my favourite Novels. The way Sebastian Barry paints with words is beyond beautiful. This book is as Epic as The Son written in the hand of a gentle poet.
The narration with subtle Irish twang gives a new angle, although in my inner voice Thomas will always have a rougher tone to him despite his femininities. Onto A Thousand Moons.

Sebastian Barry’s writing is so deep, powerful and wide reaching. It is brought into our souls’ by Aidan Kelly’s real voice of an Irish immigrant fleeing from famine and death to those times of America’s conflicts with itself in the second half of the 19th century. I felt I was out there in the Great Plains, a soldier playing its role in the West - ill and good. Civil War chapters had me reeling with its horror, but then all this is tempered with the lyrical love between the story’s heroes and their love of humanity and justice in a social context way behind their choices. Superb from start to finish - an heroic poem often of all those days.
