Summary

David Copperfield vient au monde dans le Sud-Est de l'Angleterre, au début du règne de la reine Victoria. Sa naissance semble marquer son destin d'un sceau funeste car c'est un enfant posthume : son père est mort six mois avant sa naissance. Toute sa vie, inconsciemment, il cherchera une figure paternelle qui lui a cruellement manqué. Cependant, ses premières années sont heureuses. Il vit dans la petite ville de Blunderstone, élevé par sa mère qui l'aime tendrement et soigné par la servante de la famille, la bonne et robuste Peggotty. Un beau jour, Peggotty emmène David dans la ville de Yarmouth, petit port à l'est du pays. Là vit la famille de Peggotty. Leur maison est étrange : c'est une coque de navire renversée sur la plage.

L'enfant passe des vacances délicieuses, et rentre à Blunderstone pour trouver son monde bouleversé. En effet, sa mère s'est remariée. Son époux est le sombre Mr Murdstone, dont les principes d'éducation n'incluent ni la tendresse ni la gentillesse. L'atmosphère de la maison devient vite irrespirable pour un enfant. Mr Murdstone va jusqu'à lever la main sur David et le fouette. Indigné, l'enfant se révolte et mord la main de la brute. En représailles, il est envoyé en pension.

Was sorry when it was over

Favourite Dickens novel so far. Well translated. Wonderful performance. Listened to it twice. Hope more French Dickens translations will become available
