Billions died during the First Trial on Day One. The day the devil came to Earth to play. The Planetary Games. An intergalactic game show. Earth is the Colosseum—and humanity its gladiators. Empowered with alien magic and knowledge, humanity is pitted against each other in a vicious struggle for supremacy, where there is only one survivor. Dan is dead set on making it to the end, but not for himself. Every night, Dan dreams of the family that died, but he wasn’t the only one who survived the First Trial. His sons gave their lives protecting their newborn sister, Aurora. Their sacrifice will not be in vain. He will do whatever it takes to ensure she makes it to the end before taking his own life. Aurora will win the Planetary Games. The only problem is, young children were never meant to survive the first trial, let alone the rest of the game. An exciting new LitRPG Apocalypse series by K. J. Kiki.

Perfect for fans of Dungeon Crawler Carl and Defiance of the Fall. LitRPG mechanics such as classes and skills. Weak to strong MC. Multiple POV. Mature Content. No explicit sexual content.

Very nice story and story telling. Now we have to wait for next book. There was nothing particular to dislike. Great read / listen.

I got this book for free, so I figured I’d leave a review.

It was actually a pretty interesting book to listen to. At the start, I did wonder about the MC’s reaction to what happens and why he doesn’t completely lose himself in grief. But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Sometimes you just have to keep going when there’s someone else depending on you.

I also like that the MC is basically just a normal dad with a dad bod. He doesn’t suddenly become an unstoppable badass because the system gives him powers. His progression is slower and feels a bit more believable because of that.

There are definitely times when you’re thinking, “Why are you doing this?” or just “What are you doing, man?” but when you look at things from his point of view, most of his decisions make sense. He just doesn’t really get much time to stop and process everything.

Overall, it’s a dark, interesting and enjoyable book. It’s well written, well narrated, and I liked the progression system. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book.

Darker and slightly more realistic.

I really enjoy the pacing and the emotional maturity of the storytelling, as well as the distinct character voices of the three POVs. The progression doesn't feel rushed and Dan's cheat doesn't get in the way of a satisfying progression. The story deals with grief and gets heavy at times, not the typical power fantasy — I enjoy the exploration of these themes, but if you are looking for pure escapism, then it might be too emotionally straining in a few chapters.

Mature but emotionally straining LitRPG Apocalypse
