Der Winter kam früh. Sogar für North Dakota. Der Schnee nahte unaufhaltsam aus nordöstlicher Richtung. Ich konnte ihn bereits spüren. Himmel und Horizont verschmolzen zu einem diffusen Grau. Die sichtbare Welt schrumpfte auf wenige Quadratkilometer. Ich stand auf meiner Veranda und dachte darüber nach, dass meinem Heimatort Easthope mal wieder eine harte Zeit bevorstand. Ich sollte mich irren: Es würde unerträglich werden. Mit dem Schnee zog das namenlose Grauen in die Stadt ein. Und niemand war da, um uns zu retten.
