Summary
Die Novelle "Das Erdbeben in Chili" ist die erste gedruckte und eine der frühesten Novellen Heinrich von Kleists. Unvermittelt wird gleich mit dem ersten Satz der Novelle die doppelte Katastrophe des einzelnen und der Gemeinschaft thematisch eingeführt. Am Ende wird die zerstörerische Kraft der Natur noch von der Wildheit der Menschen überboten. Die Frage, ob eine unbegriffene Gottheit den eruptiven Untergang einer bisher gewollten Ordnung gewollt hat, bleibt in den einander widersprechenden Tatsachen unbeantwortbar (aus: Kindlers Literaturlexikon).
