Summary

‘A wonderful and perceptive novella, with many sentences demanding to be read twice’-Susan Furber, author of The Essence of an Hour

An unnamed narrator is forced to repeat the last night of his life over and over. Can he work out what’s real and write himself a happy ending?

I really enjoyed the premise of this novella. The writing was so descriptive and absorbing. It was brought to life perfectly but the narrator. My only criticism was the way it tackled the HEA concept. It was a brilliantly different twist on that concept of one small action changing the outcome of events, merged together with that trapped and confused feeling of groundhog day. It's for that reason I was a little disappointed by the ending. It was still cleverly written, and not something easily foreseen, but just didn't fit with the creativity of the rest of the plot for me. I'll definitely be searching out more by both the author and the narrator.

A really wonderful book which draws you in and doesn't let go. Great depth and complexity yet also really enjoyable, loved it!

Brilliant storytelling!

Beautifully written and gorgeous to hear it brought to life in this audiobook. Hitting rock bottom and his life unravelling, the unnamed and unreliable narrator has to work through emotions, experiencing love, grief, despair and mental health struggles. It’s an emotional read but there’s some humour too!
Definitely feel like I would benefit from relistening to it as even though I really enjoyed it, I feel like there’s even more to it than I got on the first read.

Thoughtful and imaginative

Darling Sorrow is a thoughtful, atmospheric book. It follows an unnamed narrator being made redundant, and the aftermath, and then him caught in a recursive loop as he works through crisis and redemption through an unexpected connection. It's reflective and explores the character’s internal world, while being funny, but with the truth hard to pin down.

Kevin Cherry’s narration is great. His delivery is calm, natural and understated, handling the shifts between vulnerability and quiet dry humour without ever overplaying it. He gives the story a momentum and makes the audio production engaging. Great stuff all round.

A thoughtful listen, brilliantly narrated

I loved this, it was so compelling I didn’t want to stop listening. A beautifully written story of somebody coming undone and trying to find their way back again.
