About this listen

Detective Inspector Frank Elder's first case was unsolved. A dead woman, lying on a bed, immaculately dressed. The murderer was never found: free to kill again. Eight years later, Elder's estranged wife contacts him in his Cornish hideaway. Her friend's sister Claire has mysteriously disappeared. Elder reluctantly agrees to help. Then Claire is found dead, arranged with meticulous detail on her bed, and it doesn't take long for Elder to make the connection. It's obviously the work of the same unbalanced individual. And to find the killer, Elder must shine a light into the darkest recesses of human behaviour.©2006 John Harvey (P)2007 by W F Howes Ltd. Although I thought I had worked out who the baddies were early on there were enough twists and turns to keep me riveted and needing to know the whole story. The whole concept is darkly believable. Loved every minute of it.

Gripping from start to finish

The stars I have given are for the author - but I am only half way through so far. Mediocre slow moving plot, made so much harder by the narrator. He is ok until he gets to dialogue, but then it is painful to listen. All the characters speak in fast clipped sentences (the female characters the most), all with the same strange emphasis, which just makes the characters all seem identically uptight, nervy and difficult to like. I think the book would be readable, but not great, but this narrater makes listening an ordeal.

Mediocre plot read badly
