About this listen

Still raw from the brutal slayings of his wife and daughter, and the events surrounding the capture of their killer, The Travelling Man, Charlie Parker retreats to the wintry Maine landscape of his childhood. By following in the steps of his beloved grandfather, Parker hopes to heal his spirit and get through the bitter anniversary of Jennifer and Susan's murder. But the echoes of the past that await him are not all benign. In a gruesome re-enactment of Parker's own nightmares, another young woman is killed with her child and his brief involvement in their lives impels Parker to hunt their vicious murderer. As the death toll mounts, Parker comes to realise that the true answer to the puzzle lies thirty years in the past, in a tree with strange fruit, in his own grandfather's history, and in the perverted desires of a monster incarnate - Caleb Kyle.

I wasn’t sure if the audible version would be as enjoyable as reading it myself. But it did not disappoint. This series are my favourite books and I have completely enjoyed the experience of listening to the storyline. I fully recommend the experience.

Excellent Story

He does write so beautifully, John Connolly; horror, with a poet’s sensibility. The reviewer who found the descriptive longuers too much, was right, though: his editor should be more strict with the blue pencil, in order to free the story. You do find yourself thinking, Oh DO get on with it, at times in the first third. Difficult to cut someone who writes so beautifully, though. But once the story takes off in the back two-thirds, it’s great stuff: lots of tension and meticulously executed shoot-outs. Plenty of wit in the story, too, and the delightful Angel and Louis back and in the thick of it. I dread one of them being dispensed with and am holding my breath a little for that. And Jeff Harding - well, he’s just the best there is. He voices protagonists as though he lives through them. He’s simply terrific. And for this kind of book it’s a winning combination.

Classic stuff
