About this listen
Being a dark fae isn’t exactly something you go around telling people. Not unless you want your life destroyed. But when you talk to ghosts and have deadly powers, it’s kind of hard to hide the truth. Even though I try.
No, I don’t go around smiling and farting rainbows like the light fae, but I do keep this secret close to my heart. Because all my life I was pretty sure the only thing that could rock my world was if anyone found out what I am.Until my brother is murdered.
My brother. My best friend. They say it was a stupid accident. But I don’t believe it. I want to burn the whole world down, and say to hell with this secret and let the dark fae within me roar in vengeance. And I will. You bet I will. But first...first I have to do the hardest thing I’ve ever imagined. I have to go to a school with a bunch of jerk light fae and secretly figure out who is responsible for my brother’s murder. No, it’s not going to be easy. Especially not when my brother’s three best friends become my new roommates. I’ve cared for them all my life. But right now? Everyone is a suspect, including them. No matter how much they might tempt my dark heart to soften. Because if there’s one thing a dark fae isn’t known for, it’s our soft hearts. But revenge? Yeah, that’s right up my alley....

RH, Academy setting
20+ Yrs FMC, morally grey and powerful from the start
3/4 MMCs
Multiple POVs
Fated mates
Touch her and die vibes
Miscommunication causes mistrust vibes.
Light and Dark Fae, demons, monsters, witches and probably more.
Fast burn, like light speed with spice, smex and smut.
First book and it's okay, it had potential but unfortunately it doesn't flow like it could.
There are times when I think I've missed something and go back to check.
But nope not me.
It all feels too fast to reveal...like what is an iron demon and where did it come from, how come she knows its name but failed to know she couldn't harm it like she thought she would.
How did she discover she could talk to ghosts or do what she did and what was the reaction from her family? A retelling of her first ghost and being told she's different and has to hide it would have added depth. Memories of her and her brother supporting her and showing their strong bond would have helped...
I don't feel like I got to know the FMC enough, the short look into her life was too short, I got to know she's a badass and has great confidence, but that's it...I needed more of a connection.
The same goes for the MMCs as well, I can't remember their names or see a difference in them more than the weight of future family and title duties, and obvious alpha traits.
The smex was lacking for similar reasons too, it had all the right ingredients to be hot as fck, but just missed links and things which made my mind lapse in concentration.
Then again there is a prequel, but I'm reading this through audio, and it was available so I didn't know. Maybe the prequel would have set the stage, but I've read books that had prequels and still managed to paint better depths in the 1st book....
Oh, the audio, not great. It's one narrator and while some female narrators can do distinctive male voices, so well it all works. Her voice hardly changes, great for the FMC but not so great for the MMCs' POVs.
Now I'm going to keep going with the series because the plot is an intriguing one, and although it misses a beat...a lot of beats, I'm hoping it will make up for it.

Book 2
Better than book 1. But still lacking and it's annoying because it could be a great read. I just find the style of writing is for such a plot with so much potential too simple...not sure simple is the right word. But it just misses out on opportunities to add depth in the easiest places.
Even though it is all so meh, it is an easy read, and the potential of the plot is enough for me to carry on reading. I just know I will forget most of this, and am thankful the books are short. If the style had been better and more filling I am sure it would have been a nice long read, allowing me to dive into the world, bond with the characters and start to feel more when dark things like being kidnapped or a great battle happen.
In the end, I still can't name all the names, they are all distinct but just surface level in build, just like the world build, just like the smex and smut which could be hot but is lacking.

Book 3
The last book in the series and it wrapped up well. Not hard to do with a series without the build or depth needed to make it memorable, it had to bones to be great but wasn't written with enough for me to get hooked or relate to much.
It was enough for me to want to finish the series, it was entertaining enough to keep me coming back. But it was also disappointing to have a book in multiple POVs but missing their views in big moments.
Anyway, it ends in a HEA for the FMC and the 4 MMCs, they have lots of smutty smex although lacking in something that could turn it hot and make me jealous.
Even the reveal of the villain was just a wash, I couldn't remember who that guy was, I have a vague idea but the connection was weak because there was not enough to the villain to feel betrayed or angry about
I was happy to get a bit more back story and emotion from the characters in this book, but it was too late to make the difference I needed to love the series..
It could have been great, instead, it's an okay/good read
