Story
When Pestilence comes for Sara Burn’s town, one thing is certain: everyone she knows and loves is marked for death. Unless, of course, the angelic-looking horseman is stopped, which is exactly what Sara has in mind when she shoots the unholy beast off his steed. Too bad no one told her Pestilence can’t be killed. Now the horseman, very much alive and very pissed off, has taken her prisoner, and he’s eager to make her suffer. Only, the longer she’s with him, the more uncertain she is about his true feelings towards her, and hers towards him. And now, well, Sara might still be able to save the world, but in order to do so, she'll have to sacrifice her heart in the process.

It all started with a mysterious blue note sewn into a wedding dress. Something blue. I’d gone to sell my own unworn bridal gown at a vintage clothing store. That’s when I found another bride’s “something old". Stitched into the lining of a fabulously feathered design was the loveliest message I’d ever read: Thank you for making all of my dreams come true.

And no matter how much the ruggedly handsome male appeals to her, this is one call of the wild she's determined to ignore.

Summary
Dark Alpha's Claim is the first in an exclusive new series from New York Times best-selling author Donna Grant!
There is no escaping a Reaper. I am an elite assassin, part of a brotherhood that answers only to Death. And when Death says your time is up, I am coming for you....
My whole existence is based on taking what Death wants. Born to eliminate Fae guilty of unforgivable crimes, my reckless, wild nature makes me the perfect assassin to carry out Death's bidding. I've seen more sinister and violent dealings than anyone could ever imagine. But it was the sight of her face that stopped me cold. I've never wanted a woman - never mind a human - so badly, never felt my heart, hardened by death, burn brighter and hotter until it burst into flames.
She is everything I desire. The kind of woman who compels you to stake your claim on her, to let the world know that she's yours. A Reaper saving her life will only attract danger, but I vow to protect her at all costs from the Fae that hunt her and keep safe the woman who has claimed me body and soul.

A Fast Paced Start To This Magical Spin-Off Series
I have not read the previous books in the Dark Kings series which this is related to but I don't feel that it's necessary as Ms Grant has included any information that is pertinent within these pages.
I downloaded the narration of this book as I enjoy listening to the story as I read along. Victoria McGloven is a new-to-me voice actor and while I liked the tonal variations that she used for the different characters' dialogue, I felt that some of the pace of her narration during the exciting fight scenes was a bit pedestrian.
I already have the next book in the series patiently waiting on my Kindle and look forward to finding out what happens next.

struggled
Balan is a Reaper that has fallen for Jordan a half human half fae which is a death sentence for both of them. When Jordan agrees to be bait for the Reapers group they find a former ally isn't who they think they are.
I struggled through this book. I wanted to like it, but couldn't connect or visualize the story half the time.
Perhaps the reason why I couldn't connect was I felt the narrator was all wrong for this story. Donna Grant doesn't grab me as a romance narrator. She executes the accents with precision, but I felt no sultry, sexy moments and when she describes a sexy man, it felt less like eye candy and more like listening to someone read Dr. Seuss.

This story claimed my attention
Wow...although this is a shorter read/listen it has all the elements needed to have me not wanting to hit pause. This is a fresh take on the classic of the fae. There was enough gripping action and heated scenes to keep wanting to hear more of the reaper's story and ready to download the next.
As to the narrator...I know there were some complaints...I don't agree. There were probably better choices, but the voices were not the worst and I found that it did not distract from the story (which a lot of Narrators can do and ruin the listen).

When a hobby turns into an obsession
Dark Alpha’s Claim is the first of the Reaper series which is a spin-off of the Dark King series. This book takes place at the same time as Passion Ignites. The Reapers are new cast of characters that enrich the Dark King series and the greater Dark World.
Jordan is a halfling that knows nothing about her heritage and is fascinated by the Fae. When she is targeted by an ex-reaper her world is turned upside down and she becomes bait to capture the renegade… the only thing she captures is her very own Reaper.
As with all Donna Grant books in the Dark World series once you get in… it is hard to get out.

Nice start to series
Death has formed the Reapers to protect humanity from annihilation. She set rules on them to keep them constant to the Reaper cause. One rule is no love mates. Balan finds half fae Jordan and enlists her help in trying to defeat the dark fae. Balan and Jordan become lovers. Very good world and character development. This series ties into Grant's Dark Kings.

Goos start to a new Series
Have you listened to any of Victoria McGloven’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No this is the first book I have listened to narrated by Victoria McGloven.
Any additional comments?
This is a spin off from the Dark King Series by Donna Craig and as such I would have thought that Victoria would have listened to that series to ensure she was pronouncing the names that are duplicated between the 2 series the same as Anthony Ferguson did in his narration of that series. Whenever names I was familiar with from that series were pronounced in this book I found myself correcting Victoria in my head because she did not pronounce them the same as Anthony.

Disappointment
The story was mediocre, and the narrator was horrible. I struggled to finish this story, even though it is very short. Donna's Warrior series and her Dragon King series are so much better than this, and Antony Ferguson is a much better narrator.

Great story
I actually was into this book from the first pages normally it takes a few chapters but this was such a good book I got right into it the only reason why I gave it 4 for overall score is because the author states in the book Death has a beautiful lilting voice but this annoying narrator made her sound like an Old Hag that kinda annoyed me when I was listening to this audible I recommend finding a new narrator who won't ruin the story. What I love about the heroine is she knows what she wants and goes for it I hate the annoying girls who are so unsure of themselves and won't jump on the hot hunk who likes them

For lovers of the Dark Kings--a must read
I am soooo kicking myself. I have devoured the Dark King Series. I knew of the Reapers. Yet silly me hadn't bothered to check out the Reaper Series. The Dark Kings now makes more sense. Don't get me wrong, you don't need to read the Reapers to understand the Dark Kings, but it sure was enlightening.
The Reapers weren't allowed to have relationships. They were not to expose themselves to the elves. They were only to have one time with a human. Things changed when Baylon, reaper, meets Jordyn, half-fae.
She is soon in danger for being a half-fae. Someone wants the all dead. Someone wants to call out the Reapers. Someone wants to call out Death, leader of the Reapers.
Dark Alpha's Claim has lots of suspense as they discover who is behind it all, but fail to contain him. On to the next book.
