About this listen

For years Hermione has been oppressed by her husband, Walter. Before they married, he had seemed loving and protective. Now he was demanding and brutal. And Hermione had allowed herself to become his domestic slave.

If she went shopping, she was obliged to account for every penny of her meagre allowance. If there was a smear of grease or a speck of dust anywhere in the house, Walter would fly into a rage.

Shy and vulnerable, Hermione blamed herself. But Walter is a man whose emotions are running out of control. And as Hermione tentatively tries to acquire some independence, her husband's desire to dominate women is becoming pathologically dangerous....

I discovered Margaret Yorke years ago by reading her books, and I'm very pleased to have found her on Audible. She is a fine writer in a similar vein as Ruth Rendell. She writes about her characters with sensitivity and realism. Hermione is a woman who has been treated almost like a slave by her husband. She has been intimidated and worn down by years of domestic abuse. Her husband is a monster who sees women as objects to be controlled. Hermione begins to break out of her subjugation and her story is realistic.

The narrator is perfect for the book. I found it a very enjoyable listen.

Excellent listening.
