About this listen

Book two of the thrilling new series by internationally bestselling author of The Nevernight Chronicle and the Illuminae Files

‘Every kind of badass’ – Laini Taylor

After a battle that broke hearts, minds, and bodies, two friends find themselves on opposite sides of the same quest.

Shattered by the discovery that she is not at all who or what she believed, Eve joins forces with her new ‘siblings’. Meanwhile, Lemon finds a sense of belonging –perhaps even love – in an enclave of other genetic deviates.

But with friends and enemies, heroes and villains, wearing interchangeable faces, nothing is as it seems. Soon, Eve and Lemon are racing against each other to find a missing girl whose DNA may hold the key to saving or destroying their broken world.

Too much chasing around, everyone fighting everybody all the time, leaves no time to actually tell a story.
I love Jay Kristoff and his Nevernight series is one of my all time favourites, which is why I didn't give up a couple of hours into the first book, but kept going. But honestly, this is just nowhere near as good. It's like watching a brainless action movie - minus the stunts and the sound effects. The fact that the narrator sounds like a petulant, whiney teenager all the time doesn't make it any easier. None of the characters are remotely likeable and the whole lovesick robot thing is just tiresome. I really, really wanted to love it and damn, those cliff hangers really don't make it easy to just give up on this series, but after finishing this one, I think I just might.
