About this listen

When life gives you lemons, squeeze them into a stiff drink and stir.

After twenty years defending the frozen north against some of the most dangerous threats in the nine kingdoms, Rhoren “Bloodbane” has finally earned his retirement. While the blood mage's service to the realm may have ended, burning veins and aching joints remain, and Rhoren soon learns that a warmer climate offers relief from his chronic pain.

And a chance at a fresh start.

In the warm and relaxing atmosphere of Eastborne, the umbral elf finds a new purpose and a sense of belonging. He may have left the frozen north behind, but he brings with him the skills and strength gained from a lifetime of defending the realm. Along with his most prized possession—a book of drink recipes inherited from his father.

Spilled cocktails may not carry the same weight as spilled blood, but opening a tavern brings a unique brand of challenges. With the right friends and a little bit of luck, he might just have a recipe for success.

This book was exactly what I needed. Enjoyable low stakes story with interesting and witty characters. It definitely made me want to whip out my own cocktail shaker for some experimentation! The narration is very well done with good timing and just the right amount of heart added into each character (I've found some narrators can go a bit over the top). Thoroughly enjoyed my time in Aedrea and I can't wait for more stories set in this world.

This is a nice slow book without too much action or complexity. It is perfect for a bedtime story or as background noise while working with other things.
The narration is easy going and the voices are pleasant and distinctive for each main character.

Cursed Cocktails offers a surprisingly cozy and engaging story, blending fantasy with the comforting atmosphere of delicious drink recipes and quiet self-discovery. The plot starts off gently but develops a real sense of intrigue as it goes, building to a satisfying final fight and a fast-paced, action-packed ending that ties everything together nicely.

At its heart, it’s a story about starting over — about leaving behind the heavy expectations tied to your past and figuring out who you are when no one is watching. It explores the challenges of building trust and forming genuine friendships from scratch, with all the hesitation and small victories that come with it.

The journey of finding your own path, on your own terms, is told with warmth and a surprising depth, making it very easy to connect with the characters. The magic feels personal and flavorful (pun very much intended), and the cozy setting gives the whole adventure a unique, laid-back vibe despite the dangers lurking in the background.

Overall, Cursed Cocktails is a charming, heartfelt read — perfect for anyone who loves fantasy stories about new beginnings, trust, friendship, and of course, a few very tempting drink recipes along the way.

I won code in a competition and so pleased I did, such a nice book, I had forfeited just how good S. L. Rolland’s books are and the narration was clear, smooth and had just the right variation in voices.
