 La storia politica di Cuba è sempre stata molto travagliata. La figura centrale e più controversa della sua storia recente è stata senza dubbio quella di Fidel Castro, il "lider maximo" che ne è stato primo ministro e poi Presidente del Consiglio di Stato.

Castro, assieme al fratello Raúl, a Ernesto Che Guevara e Camilo Cienfuegos, è stato uno dei principali protagonisti della rivoluzione cubana contro il regime del dittatore Fulgencio Batista e, dopo il fallito sbarco nella baia dei Porci da parte di esuli cubani appoggiati dagli Stati Uniti d'America, proclamò l'istituzione della Repubblica di Cuba, uno Stato monopartitico di stampo socialista, che secondo Castro e i suoi sostenitori è una democrazia popolare apartitica, ma che i dissidenti e buona parte degli analisti politici internazionali definiscono come regime totalitario.
