Why do some people manipulate, exploit, and harm with chilling consistency—while others, even when raised in the same environment, do not? Cruelty by Nature dismantles the comforting myths that abuse is merely the product of trauma, bad parenting, or social wounds. Instead, it draws from neuroscience, genetics, and clinical psychology to reveal a sharper truth: personality pathology is rooted in stable biological systems that bias individuals toward exploitation.

Dr. Peter Salerno, a retired licensed psychotherapist and expert in personality disorders, blends rigorous research with survivor testimony to illuminate the circuits, chemistry, and strategies that drive narcissistic, psychopathic, borderline, and histrionic abuse. From altered brain networks and neurotransmitter imbalances to the cold logic of instrumental cruelty, this book makes clear that abuse is not an accident of hurt people “acting out”—it is often intentional, calculated, and biologically sustained.

More than a scientific account, Cruelty by Nature calls for a cultural shift. By moving beyond trauma-only narratives, we can better protect victims, hold perpetrators accountable, and advance psychology as a true science. Survivors will find their experiences validated; professionals will find new frameworks for treatment, prevention, and justice.

Challenging, uncompromising, and deeply necessary, Cruelty by Nature reframes the conversation about abuse. It is a manifesto for understanding human cruelty as it is—not as we wish it to be—so that healing, justice, and change can finally take root.

Dr Salernos viewpoint is sobering for all victims who are lost in the confusing "facts" on social media that only adds up to their confusion as they try to heal. Its so refreshing to finally hear an opinion that resonates with what we have been going through in our relationships with people who tried to get away with cruelty.

This book is short, speaks to what we can grab at and doesent demand that you have a degree to understand what he explains. It is not "another self help book on narcissists" made to lure victims buying a book that wont make any sense. It describes what we know, what we have seen and confirms our many unanswered questions from our experiences.
Most valuable is how Dr Salerno disproves common misbelieves in popular media about this topic with unbiased facts that is available for anyone to cross check.

I am so tired of self proclaimed "experts" that only want attention and monetization for their media channels.

Thank you doctor!

I’ve listened to this book 3 times, it’s been my soundboard to help me push through the saddest part of my entire life. It helped me to see the monster he was instead of the broken man I thought he was. This is a book that I wish I never had to learn or know about, but I am so grateful that I did stumble across it! It’s what you need to know instead of what you wanted to know… I wish it wasn’t so but it is. Thank you, Dr. Peter Salerno, your book came at the right time.

Interesting take on people who are purposefully cruel. The book really helped to explain behaviour that is otherwise unfathomable and creates huge cognitive dissonance. Some things he perhaps could have expanded, might have been the way cruel people tend to treat their children differently and create triangulation, competition and often, scapegoats and golden children... That might explain some of the differences between children. He says children are brought up in the same environment in a family. I think it's pretty well established that no child grows up in the same environment. Parents treat their children differently because each child is different. And of course genetics will play a part in that. Also, if cruelty has a genetic basis, then it may be likely that a parent is cruel by nature and the child will copy that cruel behaviour also influencing how they develop. Thought provoking and a good read.
