About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
Written by number one New York Times best-selling author Marieke Nijkamp, Critical Role: Vox Machina - Kith & Kin follows a brand-new story, featuring the cunning ranger Vex'ahlia and the conning rogue Vax'ildan (and, of course, Trinket) years before they meet Vox Machina.
After leaving the unwelcoming refuge of Syngorn, the twins become entangled in a web spun by the Clasp, and for the first time Vex and Vax find themselves on opposite sides of a conflict that threatens the home they have carried with each other for years.

The flashbacks that dot the story from beginning to end are content that any long term fan will already know. The bulk of the plot however is a new tale that has vax and vex divided both physically and philosophically. Through it all you see the same sibling bond and trust that is to be expected from the two. All the while they pick up items and equipment that we know they have come the start of the comics.
This story is enjoyable enough though somewhat predictable once the main themes are introduced. Insteas the story thrives on the audio narrative medium. You listen to hear vex and vax again, with performances unique to Laura and Liam’s depth of experience with the characters. Robbie also did a fantastic job as narrator and I’ve added him to my sadly short list of audible narrators I can tolerate.
I appreciated the books darkness and willingness to portray the cruelties of dungeons and dragons like combat and more so it’s spell list. The magic system I found lacking in description, though ultimately it isn’t necessary. This is no name of the wind or mistborn, this is a fantasy world with fantasy things that you are expected to ‘roll’ with. I did however find the absence of magic used by vex strange given her ranger background. I also couldn’t help myself joking about what feats and classes the side characters were and the rolls they must be getting in battle.
If you love critical role and need some new content with vox machina, I recommend picking it up for a nice weekend distraction. But, only if you need to burn some unused credits. 15hrs is too short to go burning valuable audible slots, when there are more efficient book choices out there ;)
A critter’s delight, but not a stand-alone
