Throughout history, there's been one indelible quality that great leaders, makers, artists and fighters have shared. The Zen Buddhists described it as inner peace, the Stoics called it ataraxia and Ryan Holiday calls it stillness: the ability to be steady, focussed and calm in a constantly busy world. This quality, valued by every major school of thought from Buddha to Seneca, John Stuart Mill to Nietzsche, is urgently necessary today. And, Holiday shows, it is entirely attainable.

Think of The War of Art as tough love...for yourself. Since 2002, The War of Art has inspired people around the world to defeat "resistance"; to recognize and knock down dream-blocking barriers and to silence the naysayers within us. Resistance kicks everyone's butt, and the desire to defeat it is equally as universal. The War of Art identifies the enemy that every one of us must face, outlines a battle plan to conquer this internal foe, then pinpoints just how to achieve the greatest success.

Summary
Life isn’t about “finding” fulfillment and success - it’s about creating it. Why then has creativity been given a back seat in our culture? No longer.
A Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times and Publishers Weekly Best Seller
Creativity is a force inside every person that, when unleashed, transforms our lives and delivers vitality to everything we do. Establishing a creative practice is therefore our most valuable and urgent task - as important to our well-being as exercise or nutrition.
The good news? Renowned artist, author, and CreativeLive founder, Chase Jarvis, reminds us that creativity isn't a skill - it's a habit available to everyone: beginners and lifelong creators, entrepreneurs to executives, astronauts to zookeepers, and everyone in between. Through small, daily actions we can supercharge our innate creativity and rediscover our personal power in life.
Whether your ambition is a creative career, completing a creative project, or simply cultivating a creative mindset, Creative Calling will unlock your potential via Jarvis’s memorable “IDEA” system:
- Imagine your big dream, whatever you want to create - or become - in this world.
- Design a daily practice that supports that dream - and a life of expression and transformation.
- Execute on your ambitious plans and make your vision real.
- Amplify your impact through a supportive community you’ll learn to grow and nurture.

Solid.
I really like Chase Jarvis, he's inspired my own creative work many times over the last few years. I've been encouraged by his 'hard friendly talks' and generally pushed to try and make more art. I got this book on day one and managed to get through it in a few days. The book is well read by Chase which always helps. Whilst this book is good it's fairly shallow - the information is solid and foundational, things that every creator should be regularly reminded of but it doesn't go much further than that. If the book was half the length I don't think the content would have been reduced. If you are new to being creative then I would strongly recommend this book but for an 'intermediate' or 'advanced' artist check out the book 'Art And Fear' for a deeper exploration on the creative process. It's also very auto-biographical, many of his points are backed up by his own personal successes and mistakes - the stories are told with humility, they're certainly not bad but as someone who had already heard these tales I got a bit bored. I wonder if the application of his points could have been widened if he didn't always talk about his own experiences. Lastly, I found the front cover to be dull, it looks like a sociology text book... The book's good but not exceptional.

Must read for all creatives
As a professional designer I identified with all that Chase talked about in his book. It an exceptional listen with no filler. Just concrete ideas and practices. It's packed full of stories and advice and would be useful for people in less creative job roles also. I have no criticisms apart from I wish he wrote it earlier! I very rarely listen to books more than once but I will listen again in a years time. FYI I had not known of Chase before listening apart from one interview with Lewis Howes(which encouraged me to buy the audiobook). More established followers of his work may get less new information from it however it's always good to have healthy foundational ideas repeated.

The Artist's Way for the 21st Century
I'm at an inflection point in my life where I'm choosing to change paths and opt for one with a lot more creativity at the heart of it. I'm excited about what is next and how 2020 plays out and for me, Chase Jarvis' book, Creative Calling is going to be playing a massive part in this. The brilliance of this book lies in how Chase Jarvis tells his own story of his creative journey and uses that as a way to give life to the lessons he is imparting in the book. It's one of the few books on creativity, bar Austin Kleon's series of books and Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way that I can see myself coming back to as a reference to help me out when I'm stumbling with my creative journey. If I were putting together a curated list of books on creativity, this book would definitely feature in there!

Inspiring and Actionable
There are so many great bite-sized gems in this book along with actionable takeaways. This is great to keep in your ears and revisit again and again. What I loved most was how Chase, again and again, brought clarity to creativity: what it is, why it matters, and how to find. Often we make things so muddled and complicated and masters are those that can communicate clearly and concisely. Chase does that and more in this book. Whether you are going to apply this to art or leadership, this is must-have in your collection.

What every new, upstart, creative needs to hear
I started my own photography and digital creative production team a few years ago and went through the typical issues of doubt, burn out, wrong turns etc all the while reading and listening to as many self help books that while often helped in some way, never quite got the struggle of what I was going through correctly until I heard of and picked up this book. Every chapter, every turn, every line that Chase talks about is exactly what I've gone through and see what others in my field goes through, so much so that I've recommended this book practically to every single person I interact with.

Always love having Jarvis in my ears.
When I was growing up, it was customary to have the teachers that were assigned to you. That was it. Now, with virtual classrooms, it's possible to choose from a world full of teachers. It's a gift. I've found some amazing teachers, including Tim Ferriss, who introduced me to Chase Jarvis. I believe that there's probably an ideal mentor out there for everyone and Jarvis happens to be mine. It's not just because of what he knows and what he's done. I'm also drawn to him as a role model and fellow human because of who he is. More than any of my other great teachers, he's just right up my alley. So, yeah, I'll read any book he writes and I'll support him in all his endeavors. Regarding this book specifically, I'm grateful to have his thoughts on this simple but profound subject distilled and organized in one neat package. I'll listen to it again from time to time, I'm sure, and I'm sure it will help me each time. Rock on with your bad selves, fellow humans. Rock on with your bad self, Jarvis, and thanks for everything, brother.

New Ideas on Creativity
Jarvis reveals fresh and updated views on creativity that are bound to resonate with readers no matter what their profession (or lack thereof). I read it after finishing Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert and The War of Art by Steven Pressfield and it was on par with inspiration but takes a more actionable approach that I found helpful. Not only did I appreciate the positive mindset approach, but I was looking for concepts that I could APPLY. And I found them here in Creative Calling.
