About this listen

In this novel of mounting suspense from award-winning author Herbert Lieberman, a terrifying surprise waits beneath a couple’s New England home. Albert and Alice Graves live a normal, if monotonous, domestic life. They never had children; they spend their days tending to their home and enjoying their time together.

One day, when the oil man, Richard, is refilling their furnace, Alice invites him to dinner, never suspecting that a casual act of charity will lead to a horrifying, morbid discovery in the crawlspace underneath their beloved house.

The Graves take Richard into their lives, becoming attached to his presence as though to the son they never had. Their town, though, is not nearly so welcoming. When the locals lash out against the Graves and their strange houseguest, the contented household is irrevocably drawn into a darkness they could not have imagined.

Woah, this was a pleasant surprise! I randomly started it because it was free and had a blast. It's so interesting how one character determines the genre of a story - 'till the end I wasn't sure is it horror, or wholesome life story or psychological drama or something in between. The narrator had a perfect voice for the MC whose POV we follow.

Still thinking about it

I picked this up because I enjoyed The Eighth Square. This is quite different, but an absolute gem of a character-driven psychological thriller. A retired couple find a young man they'd had some casual contact with, when he delivered fuel to them, has taken up residence in the crawlspace of their basement. Over the course of the book he infiltrates and disrupts their lives in increasingly destructive ways.

A strange and gripping psychological drama

Not what I expected but then that’s point of book I think. The expectation of what will happen next was there till the very end. Loved narration

Couldn’t stop listening
