About this listen

In this novel of mounting suspense from award-winning author Herbert Lieberman, a terrifying surprise waits beneath a couple’s New England home. Albert and Alice Graves live a normal, if monotonous, domestic life. They never had children; they spend their days tending to their home and enjoying their time together.

One day, when the oil man, Richard, is refilling their furnace, Alice invites him to dinner, never suspecting that a casual act of charity will lead to a horrifying, morbid discovery in the crawlspace underneath their beloved house.

The Graves take Richard into their lives, becoming attached to his presence as though to the son they never had. Their town, though, is not nearly so welcoming. When the locals lash out against the Graves and their strange houseguest, the contented household is irrevocably drawn into a darkness they could not have imagined.

not sure if I liked it or not .. was a strange tale and seemed a bit disjointed in places the things you really wanted to know were only covered right at the end and a bit of a anti climax

Not what you may be expecting from the the title, but this is a great story of the human need to love and be loved, and what can happen when this need is applied to the wrong recipient at the wrong time by the wrong humans. There is a lesson for us all in this wonderful, heart wrenching tale. I just loved it.

After struggling to find something to spend my tokens on I stumbled across this free listen. I expected some form of horror novel but was surprised to find a most enjoyable listen which I can't easily catagorise. The narration is one of the best I've heard it's as if the character of Albert is recounting events and the writing is equally as good the description of Alice, her cooking, and kitchen made me hungry.
This book is a joy, one of the best I've listened to.
