About this listen

The infamous Dodd murders are hardly among Eastport's proudest legacies. So when best-selling true-crime author Carolyn Rathbone arrives to research the case for a new book, the locals in the seaside town let her know that she's about as welcome as a spoiled clam. But surely no one would harm a crime writer out of a sense of civic pride--or would they?

Jake has her own problems, from the mysteries of old-house insulation to an anonymous caller plaguing her with death threats. But with Carolyn's arrival, the slayings of the wealthy Dodd women suddenly go from cold case to hot topic - much to someone's dismay. For Carolyn Rathbone's untimely investigation has unearthed a string of deadly secrets that a cunning killer is grimly determined to rebury, right along with Carolyn herself.

The story-line is disjointed by all the many forays into dead end and totally unnecessary distractions; for example pages on describing how to insert wall insulation....as a reader I was totally disinterested and wondered what the relevance was? In other examples there were pages recounting reveries from characters (who are under dire threat and should be making getaways) engaging in long winded mental discussions on 'what ifs....' instead of actually reacting normally....or spending precious time in silly, unrealistic arguments when death threats beckon....
The thread of the story is continually interrupted by these blind alleys and completely dispenses with any suspense build up. It was a real marathon of intent to finish this one!

Interesting story but hard going.
