Summary

Religion's decline in the modern world turns out to be a myth.

Christianity is the most widespread global belief system and promises to remain so well into the future. But for many educated Westerners, biblical Christianity is a dangerous idea - challenging some of their deepest beliefs.

Channeling state-of-the-art research, personal stories, and careful biblical study, Confronting Christianity explores 12 questions that keep many of us from considering faith in Christ. Look more closely, McLaughlin argues, and the reality of suffering, the complexity of sexuality, the desire for diversity, the success of science, and other seeming roadblocks to faith become signposts. Jesus becomes not a relic from the ancient world but our modern world's best hope.

Tells content Christians what they want to hear

I found it rather shallow and biased. It uses other's theories and anecdotes as argument for truth, and appears to rely in academic language to come across as intelligent and factual. I am a Christian, but with questions and I found that it drove me away from Christianity by it's blithe and predictable adherence to the most common Christian arguments. It was very unsatisfying. I would caution against those with secure faith, who are excited by hearing their own views expressed academically, thinking that non Christians or people with questions will be convinced by this. The arguments, at least for me, in some cases had the opposite effect

confronting Christianity

although I expected more from this audible, I would like to say I really enjoyed listening to this audible. Author has touched on the most important questions we as humans ask every day of our lives. I also bought the ebook with audible for better understanding and highlight parts of the book. I enjoyed it very much

An accessible apologetic book

This is a well thought through apologetic book which address some of the biggest arguments against Christianity - but it's not ivory towered but earthed in reality. It has a refreshing honesty which seeks to open up dialogue on these issues with integrity and the implications of many of the conclusions are contrasted against their outworking in our lives. Christians will find it empowering, sceptics and open minded atheists are likely to find it thought provoking and closed minded atheists will probably just steer well clear of its many challenges to their worldview.

A well worth modern look into why Christianity is more relevant than ever

A much valued listen through. Compelling, fresh and thought-producing book. If you are willing to listen in to a gifted communicator giving time to unpick some of the common objections thrown in the face of 21st Century Christianity, I think you will find it a valuable listen. As an already-Jesus-following-Christian you may expect me to say that, but this book covered a number of angles I was less familiar with in a vibrant and easy to follow fashion. I tremendously valued listening to this and found many points I had never considered or did not have an answer to - this book will be my staple for suggesting to inquisitive friends for a good while.

Compelling, calm and helpful

Rebecca’s reading of her own book is calm and compelling and helpful, even when addressing controversial and hard topics. Rebecca is intellectually rigorous, very biblically literate and is readable for Christians and non-Christians. This book is full of years of thinking and research and yet, explained so helpfully and succinctly for the average person to read. Really recommend.

Eloquent and Nuanced Fundamentalism

This is an eloquent and nuanced representation of a fundamentalist and Bible literalist point of view. Many liberal Christians and non-Christians tend to write off fundamentalists as bigoted zealots. Ms. McLaughlin is open minded and loving in her expressions of a kind of Christianity I don't personally support but respect.

Beautifully written defense of the Christian Faith

This will be a book that I reread and re-listen to. I highly recommend it for anyone who has ever had objections to Christianity. The last chapter was the icing on the cake and one of the best defenses of the doctrine of Hell that I have heard. The narration is a bit slow but I was able to speed it up to 1.3x in the audible app. Thank you, Rebecca McLaughlin, and I look forward to your future works eagerly.

Kudos to Rebecca McLaughlin

McLaughlin handles some of the biggest issues facing Christianity today with courage and boldness, with intellect and finesse. Her treatment of these issues is nuanced, thorough and well presented. She boldly argues in some cases for what are increasingly unpopular positions in American Christianity, all the while keeping a firm hold on grace and truth. Well done.

McLaughlin gets to the Heart of Christianity

I really enjoyed this book! I felt like it really dealt with some difficult topics and went places I didn't expect. Rebecca doesn't dodge the topics we as people in 2020 really need to thing through. If your a Christian or not you will walk away challenged and changed. Well worth the listen!

Best book I’ve read (actually listened) in a long time.

This book is the best I’ve read (actually listened to) in a long time. The writer, Rebecca McLaughlin, is obviously very intelligent, educated, and most importantly, well versed in scripture and personally connected to Jesus. She shares a vast amount of information and data to support her views, demonstrating her thorough research of each question presented in her book. I so appreciate that her writing is not purely intellectual and academic though, which I thought it might be, but it is very personal, as she gives candid and frank testimony from her own personal life, as well as the personal experiences of those she knows well. These testimonies so moved my heart. Her confrontation of the hard questions personally encouraged and confirmed my faith in Jesus Christ and moved me to love Him even more. I pray that many will be led to read her book, and I will certainly recommend it to anyone that is seeking satisfying answers to these hard questions.

Challenged my thinking about previously held beliefs, and encouraged me to see myself as Christ sees me, and to see others according to grace, peace, love and truth. Great read!

Great book. Choppy and hard to listen.

Oh my God how hard is to hear/follow the story with such looong pauses between sentences! Why? I cannot finish hearing this...I crave to hear more but it is painfully hard to do. I love hearing books but this one is hard to listen. I need to read this one instead. The story, topic and information is fantastic.

Eye opening and has enriched my life

Packed with so many insights that to correctly review this book properly I need a “second” listen. Such impelling storytelling.
