Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
There is only one colour that matters, one that unites us all. And that colour is green.
The Royal Marine Commandos have become a byword for elite raiding skills and cutting-edge military operations. They are globally renowned, yet shrouded in mystery. With unique insight and authority, Commando captures the essence and heart of this revered military unit then and now, exploring their role patrolling the high seas and policing coastlines around the globe, and revealing their rich history and what it means to win and wear the legendary green beret.
With full and exclusive access to every level of the organisation, author and former Royal Marine Monty Halls tells the real stories of extraordinary individuals through a period of historic global unrest: from Future Commando forces on high-profile drug busts to Mountain Leaders training across glaciers north of the Arctic Circle, from medics who serve as global first responders in conflict to wounded veterans raising vast sums to support their brethren in the Corps Family. These are the modern vanguard of a legendary unit, descendants of the misfits and eccentrics who were so effective and feared in WW2 that Hitler famously ordered them to be shot on sight.
Accompanying a major BBC series on the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War, Commandos is an unforgettable glimpse into a rarified world of danger, drama and valour.

Hoofing
There have been many books written about the Royal Marines, their history, their battles, their heroes. None have captured their spirit as well as this book.
As a former Royal myself, listening to Monty tell the stories of some of the finest men the Corps has to offer makes me feel a sense of pride as I consider my own, comparatively minuscule contribution. It’s prompted me to get in touch with old oppos and spin a few dits, whether you know what that means or not, you should read this book.

A must read for anyone interested in UK armed forces
An excellent book and recording. I can thoroughly recommend this collection of stories highlighting the vast experience and expertise of the Royal Marine Commando Force. From training through to the support of former Royal’s. Sad ending showing the extreme pressure on our armed services personnel.

Amazing! Best Commando book I have ever read
You can’t help but be dragged along at pace through countless encounters that Monty talks about. If it were a paperback book you would never put it down.
The pace, tone and overall acknowledgement of what the Royals have done and continue to do today is amazing to listen to.
The ending was sickening but made me feel for everyone who has served in combat and their families who will ultimately be struggling too.
If you’re thinking of getting the book, don’t think just get it.

Utterly, utterly brilliant
I’m not actually sure I possess the appropriate to describe just how good this book is. Inspirational and insightful don’t even scratch the surface.
I’m an individual of no military background, nor am I particularly inclined militarily. I’m not actually even sure why I decided to buy this book, but I’m certainly glad I did. Monty is clearly deeply passionate about the Commandos, and the book is all the better for it. You can hear and feel the awe in his voice as he tells the stories of those he sat down with, and he brings their tales to life harrowingly in the best way possible. A great ode to just how elite these people really are.
I have over 150 separate titles in my library as of now, and I have absolutely no second thoughts when saying that this is the best I’ve listened to. I can see myself revisiting this many times in the coming years. Cheers Monty.

Gripping - lots of new material
I like the format - interviews with different “Royals” by someone whose worn the Green Beret himself. Totally absorbing

Fantastic
A really great telling of what the UK special forces really are and what they go through; not just on the field but how they get to that point and after.
I have a newfound appreciation for these guys after listening to this.
The narration was also excellent.

Very good
Monty Halls has done a great job. This touches on the history of the Royal Marines but it’s much more than history. Monty interviewed a number of veterans (some still serving and some Monty knew from his time as a Royal Marine) and discusses their service and specific battles. That said, the first chapter concentrates on a recruit during part of his training.
Definitely recommended.
