About this listen
Decades ago, when he was a young CIA analyst, President Jack Ryan, Sr. was sent on what was supposed to be a simple support mission to investigate the death of an operative looking into the suspicious banking activities at a Swiss bank. Ryan’s dogged tenacity uncovered not only financial deceit, but also the existence of a KGB assassin code-named Zenith.
He was never able to find the killer. But in the shadowy world of covert operations, nothing stays hidden forever. In the present, a new strong man has emerged in the ever-chaotic Russian republic the enigmatic President Valeri Volodin. His rise to power was meteoric, but shrouded in deception and treachery.
The foundations of his personal empire are built on a bloody secret from his past, and he will eliminate anyone who comes close to that truth. For he has set in motion a plot to return Russia to its former glory and might with the rest of the world once again trembling in fear of the mighty Bear. When an old friend of the Ryans is poisoned by a radioactive agent, the trail leads to Russia. And Jack Ryan, Jr. aided by his compatriots John Clark and the covert warriors of the secretive Campus must delve into an international conflict thirty years in the making, and finish what his father started.
With President Ryan fighting a desperate campaign to thwart Russian aggression, and his son fighting a silent war against a ruthless foe, the chances for global conflict grow greater ? and the possibility of survival may soon be lost for all...

If you could sum up Command Authority in three words, what would they be?
The three words I would use to sum up the latest instalment of the "Jack Ryan" series are (Gripping, Educating, Entertaining). What other book might you compare Command Authority to, and why?
It is very similar to previous "Jack Ryan" books, because it introduces something new into the mix. Each book has a new slant - International Terrorism, Biological Warfare, Cyber Warfare and now State Sponsored OC.What about Lou Diamond Phillips’s performance did you like?
He has a great way of projecting the character with his voice. Very entertaining. Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
In the epilogue when Ryan returns to London and tell Cathy he will be there in a minute once he has checked on the kids. So ordinary, so real.Any additional comments?
I hope there is another instalment although TC is no longer with us.More of the same.

The work put in to identify and remember all of the characters in the story is phenomenal and complements the complex nature of the story, helping one to follow the action without having to try and work out whom is talking to who.
Overall I'd give the story a 4, it fizzles out a little bit in the third act but the performance by Lou Diamond Phillips bumps the overall score to full marks. I just wish he would go back and re-narrate all the old books!
Lou Diamond Phillips brings the story to life

There seems to have been some problem with the recording equipment. Every 's' sounds like I'm being stabbed in the ear. Also, the volume of the narrator's sharp intakes of breath is distracting. Presumably this isn't the narrator's fault, but it's not good.
However, he did go to the Dick Van Dyke school of British accents. That's very distracting. He could have done much better.
The narration isn't a complete showstopper; you tune out the worst of it eventually. However, it's the worst I've heard in a while.
Fun, escapist nonsense. Poor recording
