About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

From the Queen of Space Horror comes a terrifying, dread-filled nightmare perfect for fans of Ridley Scott's Alien franchise.

Desperation for eternal life can lead to a fate worse than death...

Halley is on the run from an interplanetary political scandal that has put a huge target on her back. She heads for what seems like the perfect place to lay low: Elysian Fields, a gigantic space barge storing the cryogenically frozen bodies of Earth’s most fortunate citizens from more than a century ago…

The cryo program, created by trillionaire tech genius Zale Winfeld, is long defunct, and the AI hologram 'hosts', ghoulishly created in the likeness of Winfeld’s three adult children, are glitchy. The ship feels like a crypt, and the isolation gets to Halley almost immediately. She starts to see figures crawling in the hallways, and there’s a constant scraping, slithering, and rattling echoing in the vents.

It’s not long before Halley realises she may have gotten herself trapped in an even more dangerous situation than the one she was running from….

Critic reviews

Cold Eternity cements S.A. Barnes's already impressive reputation as Queen of Space Horror. So engrossing, I read it in one straight sitting. With an intoxicating blend of cosmic, existential indifference and grounded, startlingly visceral body horror, there's plenty to get your teeth into. I just can't wait to see what Barnes does next?she's the real deal. (Ally Wilkes, author of WHERE THE DEAD WAIT)
You'll want to read this one with the lights on. Terrifying and lonesome with a heroine who you'll root for, S.A. Barnes has quickly become one of my go-to horror authors! (Katee Robert)
Cold Eternity is the S.A. Barnes Creature Feature we've all been waiting for! Tense, nasty, and melancholic. The perfect combination of sleep deprivation and a space station monster! (Caitlin Starling, author of THE STARVING SAINTS)
So well done and creepy, with a twist that will shock you! (Hildur Knútsdóttir, author of THE NIGHT GUEST)

I would class this as a young adult novel.

The description promises a space horror but this book fails to deliver.

The female main character constantly makes shockingly bad decisions (for example repeatedly running headlong into dangerous situations for no good reason and without a weapon to defend herself). She also ruminates on the difficult situation she faces without resolving anything so its very repetitive and doesn't progress the story in anyway. The main characters back story was boring and added very little to the narrative.

The Narrator does a excellent job with the material. The book did deliver an atmospheric tone of foreboding, apprehension and disquiet. The overall story was ok but didn't feel it was a credit well spent.

definitely NOT for fans of the Aliens franchise !

Fantastic discovery. I will definitely be reading more of her work. Read it on Halloween, which seemed apt. Would recommend.

Great Find

Narrated well, with a good job done by the narrator.

The initial setup and world-building initially seems promising, but the story is bulked out far too long by the repeat panicked call-backs to the protagonists backstory, which quickly become irritating rather than interesting.

The author definitely shows some promise in an adult scifi/horror genre but hasn’t cracked it here

I understand the author has previous done some YA novels, and it shows in terms of characterisation & sub-plot. Some nice touches are present , but you can definitely feel the authors work-in-progress transition between the two genres.

The result is something that eventually becomes a chore to get through. This one really needed a bit more tempo, characters that are better written ….and a little less first person victimhood - a shame really.

If you liked the authors previous work, you can probably add a star to the overall rating.

Needs more meat on the bones - left me a bit cold.

This was one of the best books I've read so far this year. It had me on edge throughout.

Absolute most read for any horror fans.
