About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Pearl Mackie, best known for her role in Dr Who.

When sensible, sophisticated Flora Poste is orphaned at nineteen, she decides her only choice is to descend upon relatives in deepest Sussex. At the aptly named Cold Comfort Farm, she meets the doomed Starkadders: cousin Judith, heaving with remorse for unspoken wickedness; Amos, preaching fire and damnation; their sons, lustful Seth and despairing Reuben; child of nature Elfine; and crazed old Aunt Ada Doom, who has kept to her bedroom for the last twenty years. But Flora loves nothing better than to organize other people. Armed with common sense and a strong will, she resolves to take each of the family in hand. A hilarious and merciless parody of rural melodramas, Cold Comfort Farm (1932) is one of the best-loved comic novels of all time.

What an extraordinary tale! An unusual mix of grossly exaggerated characters and poetic description of their setting. Narration is superb, fluent and clear, bringing out the comedy with a wonderful range of voices for the large cast of personalities. Completely bonkers but very enjoyable!

I so enjoyed this book: it has everything - humour, interest, quirkiness, romance etc. I saw it described as a very funny/comical book but it is so much more than that. One of the best books I've listened to, and so well read too. I fell for the heroine hook, line and sinker!

An outstanding book

I am biased, this is possibly my favourite book in the whole world, but as such I was both delighted and anxious when the audio version (at last) became available.
I need not have worried, the reader was splendid, capably handling both Sussex rustic, county posh and east London accents, and giving a most empathetic reading.
A rich cast of characters, deliciously funny, delightfully spun with some fascinating “futuristic” elements ( remember this was written in 1931 ) I loved every minute.

Enchanting
