About this listen

Million-copy bestselling author Kate Ellis returns with the gripping new book in the DI Wesley Peterson crime series.
'A beguiling author who interweaves past and present' THE TIMES

Despite many years living in South Devon, DI Wesley Peterson has never visited the tiny island of St Rumon's. That is until erosion from a storm reveals three bodies buried outside the local churchyard.

Two are ancient skeletons, but one is far more recent, and Wesley realises he has uncovered a case of murder. But whose remains are they? And who killed them?

The island has only a small number of inhabitants. Yet one resident keeps cropping up in Wesley's investigation: the author and self-styled academic, Quentin Search.

Meanwhile Wesley's friend, archaeologist Neil Watson, becomes fascinated by the remains of the island's old priory. His discovery of a journal, written by a sixteenth century cleric, reveals an eerie tale of strange rituals and disturbing deaths.

As Wesley begins to wonder whether the past might be repeating itself, another murder occurs . . . There is a calculated killer on the island - one whose grip is as deadly as the rising tide.

Whether are already a fan of the whole series, or are discovering Kate Ellis's DI Wesley Peterson novels for the first time, this is the thriller if you love Ann Cleeves and Elly Griffiths.

Critic reviews

I loved this novel . . . Clever plotting hides a powerful story of loss, malice and deception (Ann Cleeves)
I absolutely loved this book . . . A perfectly paced crime novel that beautifully evokes both time and place. Kate Ellis keeps you guessing all the way through to the final unexpected twist (L. C. Tyler)
A splendidly macabre thriller with a very dark heart and a hugely effective twist at the end (Andrew Taylor)

I have read every single DI Wesley Peterson book over the years and always wait for the next one to come out.. The past two books I decided to listen to on audible, rather than read on kindle. The stories continue to be well plotted. with red herrings, enjoyable and up to Kate Ellis' standard but the audible version is such a disappointment. This happened on the last book but I hoped my review would be taken note of.. The narrator is far too old now for the voices, except perhaps the voices of the older generation. DI Peterson's personality does not shine through on the audible because his voice does not convey his age, background or intelligence. It is bland. That is why I review the story as a good 4 but the narration as 1 because once again it was a distraction. I will not be purchasing this series on audible again. I imagine others may feel the same.

Another great book. Narrator too old now.
