About this listen

A thrilling new adventure featuring literature’s favourite detective like you’ve never seen him before. The first in a series, Clockwork Sherlock follows ex-soldier Captain Jo Barnes. The mysterious VR detective singles her out as his own Dr Watson, but he’s about to find out she’s no fawning sidekick.

When tech giant Robert Fairfield is found dead of a suspected drug overdose, fingers are pointed at the two women who stood most to gain from his death: his fiancée and leader of the New Ludds, Greta Blackstone, and Beth Fairchild, Robert’s ambitious daughter. But when Beth is found dead and the evidence shows she was killed before her father, the suspect is obvious. To everyone, that is, except Sherlock Holmes.

Using futuristic tech and good, old-fashioned sleuthing, Captain Barnes and the famed detective set out to find the killer. With rooftop pursuits, gangland bosses and plenty of action - this listen is sure to appeal to fans of Ben Aaronovitch, Paul Cornell and Jim Butcher.

It has been quite some time since a book has ticked all my somewhat nerdy boxes. I am an avid Sherlock Holmes fan, but also enjoy a bit of sci-fy too. This book has been the absolute best recommended by Audible book for a long time - spot on!

Full marks...

struggled with the whingy quality of the storyline, particularly in the first few chapters. I did finish the book but it was more out of sheer bloody mindedness than because I was gripped by the plot.

definitely not another Ben Aaronovitch

I was a bit unsure at the beginning but a few minutes in I started to get it.
After that it was very good.
I am an addict to variants of Sherlock Holmes. I reckon it is a good way to just jump into a plot without having to create the characters.
I am looking forward to the next one.

Great start to a series

I'm a big fan of Ian's stuff, and I'm particulalry enjoying this - it engaged me from the start.
To be totally honest, the reader irritated me for a while, but I'm warming to her now - she uses her voice really well.
Highly recommended

Excellent story

This is the third modern take on a Sherlock Holmes book I have listened too recently. I thought this one was just trying too hard to appease the topics of the today, maybe even to gain popularity and kudos through them. The concept is quite interesting and it’s a good take on a modern future although you are not sure when that future is actually set. I wanted to like this book but just couldn’t grow an affinity for the main character. I’m not saying don’t listen to it as this we be loved by some, just not me.

Ok but unfortunately nothing special
