 Clavigo ist ein junger Mann, der es geschafft hat, die erfolgreiche Literaturzeitschrift "Der Denker" herauszugeben und Archivarius des Königs zu werden. Diesem Ziel musste er allerdings seine Liebe zu Marie opfern. Clavigo ist aber ihrer Familie zu großem Dank verpflichtet. Maries Schwager hatte den damals Mittellosen in seinem Haus aufgenommen und Clavigo Marie bereits die Ehe versprochen. Aber er hat die Rechnung ohne Maries Bruder, dem berühmten Dichter Beaumarchais gemacht. Denn dieser schwört Rache. Inkognito taucht er in Clavigos Wohnung auf, lobt dessen Zeitschrift und erzählt nebenbei die Geschichte einer unglücklichen Frau, die von ihrem Verlobten verlassen wurde. Langsam bekommt Clavigo Angst.
