What a great collection of inspiring stories for kids! I really enjoyed how the author put in modern day references to help the young audience better relate to the enormity of what these people did. It really brought home the message of how brave and amazing they were. Great listen!

I picked this up after Juneteenth, thinking it would be a good way for my nephews to learn more about history, and it turned out to be such a great choice. We listened together, and the stories of young heroes really grabbed their attention.

It explains the Civil War in a way that’s easy for kids to understand but still meaningful, with plenty of moments that sparked good questions and conversations. I especially liked the discussion questions at the end.

I expected this to feel like a school history book, but listening made it much more personal. A voice can add weight to a worried question or a sudden act of courage in a way that printed words sometimes leave me to imagine.

The narrator keeps the pace easy to follow, especially when the stories move between background information and action. I did find a few lessons a little direct, but that probably works well for the intended age group. My kids stayed with it longer than they usually stay with history books, and we ended up talking about several of the people afterward.
