Summary
Bloomsbury presents Cinderella Is Dead by Kalynn Bayron, read by Bahni Turpin.
Girls team up to overthrow the kingdom in this unique and powerful retelling of Cinderella from a stunning new voice that’s perfect for fans of A Curse So Dark and Lonely.
It’s 200 years after Cinderella found her prince, but the fairy tale is over. Teen girls are now required to appear at the Annual Ball, where the men of the kingdom select wives based on a girl’s display of finery. If a suitable match is not found, the girls not chosen are never heard from again.
Sixteen-year-old Sophia would much rather marry Erin, her childhood best friend, than parade in front of suitors. At the ball, Sophia makes the desperate decision to flee and finds herself hiding in Cinderella’s mausoleum. There, she meets Constance, the last known descendant of Cinderella and her step sisters. Together they vow to bring down the king once and for all - and in the process, they learn that there’s more to Cinderella’s story than they ever knew....
This fresh take on a classic story will make listeners question the tales they’ve been told and root for girls to break down the constructs of the world around them.

Awful, just awful
Written like a high school essay. Main character incredibly selfish and whiny. Also strangely ignorant of the world she supposedly grew up in - made it totally unbelievable. This would have worked much better if she had dropped in from another world like Dorothy in the wizard of Oz.

Every element of the Cinderella Story is changed
The original story is so warped it is entirely unrecognisable except the names of the characters. The first 3 hours were so bad i wanted to quit but at some point i got intrigued enough to continue anyway. This is an okay book, it was entertaining. There were plot holes all over the place. I don't quite know why it's so popular.

Not a common protagonist- Sophia is a black, gay woman who doesn't need anyone to save her. She and others met along the way try to overthrow the king who rules over a sexist misogynistic land. The woman saves herself in this one.

Bad reviews are bogus. This is great!
ok so I read some bad reviews for this book and was not going to get it. What ended up making me buy it was some Karen's scathing review of the book that called it "gay porn" and likened watching the lesbian romance in the book to watching dogs. Anything that has the power to make some homophobic jerk that angry was getting my money, regardless of the other reviews that called this predictable. I'm so glad I did because those other reviewers were clearly not paying attention.
Is this book predictable? Maybe a little, but the point of the book was never to be thrilling and full of twists and turns.
This book is a mirror to the plight of women in our society, particularly women of color and minority members of the LGBTQ+ community. This book is meant to show you that we live in this dystopia right now. It's not some long-ago nightmare, it's happening right now. Because of this book, I will not be sharing fairytales (particularly princess stories) with my kids until we can talk about the implications there. The light this shines on what we as a community are allowing to happen is to young women, minorities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community are unforgiving, harsh, and extremely necessary, PARTICULARLY for white women. If you're ready to do some soul searching and be faced with your own hand in maintaining this system we live in so you can grow and do better, read this. If you came here looking for another twilight fix or just another dystopian YA book with lots of action but no real substance, this ain't it.

Great concept, poorly executed
The concept of the book is clever and intriguing. However the last two thirds of the book are boring and feel like filler. This was extremely hard to finish and I am a huge fan of the fractured fairytale genre. The narrator reads well but the text is straight up repetative and dull. So many unnecessary, annoying scenes that serve only to make the novel longer instead of moving the plot or developing characters. I don't recommend.

Great rendition of a usually bland fairy tale
As someone who doesn't like the typical Cinderella story, this rendition did not leave me wanting! The story put a new and much needed twist on the fairy tale, one that highlights a few key criticisms of the Disney-fied version.
Sophia is a very loveable and headstrong narrator that leads the readers through the plot easily; her story is compelling in a way that the typical Cinderella retelling is not. She is a woman that is ready to do what she can for the ending she wants, not the one that has been foretold for her.
I can't wait to see what Kalynn Bayron puts out next, and would love to see her retell other fairy tales!

Almost Loved It
I love spins on fairy tales so thought I would love this book. While the story does have some twists, most of it is predictable. There are some parts that feel a bit disjointed. It feels rushed in some areas and drawn out in others. The protagonist annoyed me so it was really hard to empathize with her. She comes off as selfish and whiny and it gets to be annoying. Also, I thought it would take more of a deeper look at fairy tales as a whole and the messages we’re sending to women.
What really pulls me out of it is the narration. I really struggled with it. There are moments where it’s really good and you can feel the emotion, but the rest of the time there’s no real feeling. Some character voices are done really well, others aren’t. This is the second book I’ve listened to that she narrated; I doubt I’ll listen to another.

Great idea but...
Started out well enough, is an interesting premise but as the story advances the plot gets weaker and weaker and is too easy to see all the "twists" almost from the beginning of the book. I really wanted to like this book because the empowering representation is very rare but it could have had more substance to back it up

Gay women rule
The title of my review needs no further explanation icon as far as I’m concerned, but I feel I should clarify just in case any people fetishizing sapphic women are listening. This is a fabulous book centered on all of the ways that women, gays, and all kinds of minorities are pushed down by our society. Using a fairy tale taken to the extreme of a dystopian society is genius to me, especially considering I often think we already live in a dystopia. Anyone looking for a solid concept with social commentary and genuinely interesting characters should read this. Other people too, but especially the aforementioned. I’d like more like this please!!!

Well, That was a let down.
This book had so many things going for it. The whole time I was cheering the author on. However, she chose the path of the most predictable and, to a point, boring. I was disappointed in the story and the characters.

Simplistic :(
I loved the ideas here and was so excited for this book. But the world building is non-existent and the characters are flat and sometimes ridiculous. The simplistic nature was almost an unintended slap in the face of the real world issues at play. All in all, it was a dissatisfying listen, even with the amazing Bahni Turpin narrating.
