Story
Ever have one of those days where life just plain sucks? Welcome to my last three months - ever since I caught my can’t-be-soon-enough-ex-husband cheating with his paralegal. I’m 35 years old, and I’ve lost my NYC apartment, my job, my money, and frankly, my dignity. But the final heartache in the suck sandwich of my life? My great-aunt Maggie died. The only family member who’s ever gotten me. Even after death, though, she’s helping me get back up again. Too bad that bravado only lasts as long as it takes to drive into Huckleberry Hills. And see the house.
Summary
When Jenny inherits her estranged grandmother’s cottage in Sherwood Forest, she has nothing to lose - no money, no job, no friends, no family to speak of, and zero self-respect. Things can only get better....
Her grumpy but decidedly handsome new neighbour, Mack, has a habit of bestowing unsolicited good deeds on her. And when Jenny is welcomed into a rather unusual book club, life seems to finally be getting more interesting.
Instead of reading, the members pledge to complete individual challenges before Christmas: from finding new love and learning to bake to completing a daredevil bucket list. Jenny can’t resist joining in, and soon a year of friendship and laughter, tears and regrets unfolds in the most unexpected ways.
Warm, wise, funny and utterly uplifting. What one thing would you change in your life before Christmas comes around?

every word is too dramatic
after 5 chapters i am giving up for the first ever time. Listening to this is exhausting..every word is a dramatic yell. Its a shame as i think the story is probably good, but the narration is stressful.

Not a Christmas story
This time of year I tend to eat up Christmas-themed novels and while this is a great bit of escapism as a book, I’m afraid I feel fairly cheated out of a Christmas theme. Extremely tenuous links to the festive period!

A worth it feel good
Other reviews mention shouty performance yes it took a minute but it settles very quickly and is the character and the expression. Some great one liners in there that really made me laugh out loud and shed a couple of tears towards the end. Ultimately it is a HEA and a journey of self discovery to independence, confidence and understanding of family history and herself and what she is capable of and worth. A lovely listen.

Narrator spoils a good story
The storyline is lovely, sadly the narrator came close many times to me giving up on it, she gets way over dramatic in the style of her voice when it's completely unnecessary and it really is annoying!

Had the bones of a good story.
A bit too Mills and Boon for my taste. As I said it had the bones of a good story, the young women renovating a virtually neglected family cottage after a disastrous period of her life. Being threatened by a greedy unscrupulous developer who wanted to demolish her cottage. What spoilt it was
A) the narration was clear, but rather overacted and irritating at times.
B) the main character herself was annoying and not terribly likeable. Also rather clueless. Why did she not go to the police when her home was vandalised? Why did she keep pestering her neighbour when he clearly wanted to be left in peace and valued his privacy?
C) the romance section was rather syrupy.
I did finish the story but I am not sure I would bother with another story by the same author.

Dreadful
So glad I haven't used a credit to purchase this book .
I managed to get to chapter 26 , but with still 4 hours plus to go , I just couldn't continue .
it didn't hold my attention , I could not keep track of all the characters , and there was a lot of shouting/raised voices . The narration was awful .

Utter rubbish!!
Not my usual genre and now I remember why!!!! This starts off a bit like the movie “The Holiday”….the object of her affection isn’t into her, she lives in a tiny village in a cottage and by sheer coincidence has a handsome neighbour *eye roll*. Are there really women like this in the world? I only got to chapter 3 and couldn’t go on. It was a complete cringe fest. The main character was as annoying as thrush and the narrator was unnecessarily loud!! Horrific

Surprise! This really has good characters!
This is worth a listen. Interesting people. A multi plots and some twists and turns. Quite a few laughs and a few emotional tears!
My only complaint- they should have used more readers. Too many characters and many times hard to decipher which was speaking. I thing there are 16 characters. Good enough read to write the characters down to keep them sorted out! Read it away it’s worth the time and effort!

It was really good
I liked it - the narration and descriptions were good. The story was different than what I expected. Not really Christmasy at all, but a nice story about a girl who totally changes her life after inheriting a cottage in a remote village. It was a nice listen and caught my attention; good ups & downs, believable; and some good food descriptions that make you want to get coffee & a pastry or wine and pot of chicken
