About this listen

A man reflects on his idyllic childhood, as he tries to comprehend devastating news about his daughter.

Between 1977 and 1979, in their last years of primary school innocence, a boy and his best friend are having endless adventures in their beautiful Cotswold village.

Now, in 2003, the boy is a man, a husband, and father, whose own child lies listless in Bristol Children’s Hospital. Far from the carefree days of endless summers, Childish Ways explores the realities of growing up, of responsibilities, and of parenthood in extreme circumstances.

Childish Ways alternates between hilarious escapades of the late 1970s, to the horrors and anguish of dealing with a chronically sick child.

Heartwarming and heart-wrenching in equal measure, Childish Ways takes you on a nostalgic and suspenseful roller-coaster ride.

Childish Ways by Fran Gabaldoni surprised me; I went into it not really knowing what to expect.
It's a story of two timelines: a father pushed to the edge of disappear and misery as his child is taken ill, intertwined with his childhood memories in the late 1970s. At first, there doesn't seem to be much of a connection between the two, but you soon realise how it all pulls together perfectly.

Brilliantly narrated by Henry Douthwaite, I was immediately drawn into the book by Henry's rich tone and the distinct way he defined the timelines; it was captivating. This had me in moments of laughter to bouts of tears.

Captivating... tears and laughter.

This audio book will make you laugh out loud one minute and make you fight back the tears the next, a bit like after life on netflix does. Henry Douthwaite really does bring this audio book to life especially when describing some of the mischief young lads get up to in their youth.

The childhood narrative was fresh and well told and balanced well the trauma and intensity of the hospital narrative. Brilliantly we’ll read.

Uplifting
