Summary

Seventeen-year-old Haley McWaid is a good girl, the pride of her suburban New Jersey family, captain of the lacrosse team, headed off to college next year with all the hopes and dreams her doting parents can pin on her. Which is why, when her mother wakes one morning to find that Haley never came home the night before, and three months quickly pass without word from the girl, the community assumes the worst.

Wendy Tynes is a reporter on a mission, to identify and bring down sexual predators via elaborate and nationally televised sting operations. Working with local police on her news program Caught in the Act, Wendy and her team have publicly shamed dozens of men by the time she encounters her latest target. Dan Mercer is a social worker known as a friend to troubled teens, but his story soon becomes more complicated than Wendy could have imagined.

In a novel that challenges as much as it thrills, filled with the astonishing tension and unseen suburban machinations that have become Coben's trademark, Caught tells the story of a missing girl, the community stunned by her loss, the predator who may have taken her, and the reporter who suddenly realizes she can't trust her own instincts about this case, or the motives of the people around her.

Terrific. Best story yet.

And a fantastic narrator. Too often this can spoil a book about this narrator took on so many different personas and delivered a sterling performance.

A Different approach but a bit predictable

Storyline was a drawn out and ending was predictable.

Narrator's characters need more defining variances

Not bad

Not a bad book but the least enjoyable Harlan Coven book so far in my opinion. Only judging it by the high standards of Missing you and Stay Close and Into the Woods. I think they were the names. Tell No One? also great.

An entertaining listen but not his best.

This is not one of his better books. Although it had the usual energy and pace that I associate with a novel by Harlan Coben it was very poorly written in parts and the plot and characters lacked credibility. It felt rushed. It started well but the ending apart from one clever twist felt weak and rather drawn out. It wasn’t boring it just wasn’t great either.

The worst Coben...

What disappointed you about Caught?

..novel I ever read, or more accurately listened to. This is the abridged version and I don't know whether it was so bad because too much was edited out. The characters had no depth, and unlike most Coben characters I felt no sympathy for them at all.

What could Harlan Coben have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Character depth, a better plot.

Would you be willing to try another one of Tim Machin’s performances?

No, he was terribly annoying.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Utter disappointment, the first Coben novel to disappoint me.

Any additional comments?

Horrible reading.
